The two plates (VIN plate and body plate) are next to each other.

This is not correct, they only have one plate, a compliance plate as per Doc's thread above.

I can think of a reason...

And it's probably the same reason you should leave the car alone..

Ow, compliance plate. My bad!!!

My statement about a VIN being 17 digits/letters is still correct. It is not 18.

Interesting that no one actually pointed out that YMA2S2 is indeed the ID (body prefix) for a Mini Deluxe. So if someone does have that number on a 71 Clubbie then its not you that has the fake ID... or maybe not fake just the same numbers

As noted (Oz) Minis don't have "VINs" and its not at all surprising that the same 6 digit numbers exist in other registries... In fact it would be interesting to know how many Minis have the same "numbers" - the difference lies in the letters ie this one is YMA2S2 123456...there's probably a 850 mini wearing YMA2S1 123456..and maybe a Cooper S with YKG2S2 123456....... (All the series started with the numbers "501")

If I was interested in buying a Mini, nothing I've seen in this thread would convince me that there was anything wrong with this one.

"Earlier cars used the number on the firewall. But some dill vehicle inspectors (in NSW anyhow) seem to think the rad shroud number is used for ALL Minis.." IME the Rego people will be happy with what ever number you give them - as long as you can show them the same number stamped on the car. ....

Good luck, Ian

Ian (1071 S) is correct. And the plate verifies it too.

YMA2S2 16705 is the car number. The body number is about 500 less than that. And reiterated ~ there is no VIN number on the cars so forget that. This ID plate belongs to a Morris Mini Deluxe c.1965-66.

REVs are only as good as the information fed them somewhere back when.

A problem I'm trying to avoid is the situation where the rego authorities use only part of the number. this happens when an ID plate is removed or worse ignored. Pity its one of those results of ignorance from the dills in the authorities.

If you can make a final number check on the radiator shroud for the body number. It will not have YMA2S2 preceding it but M205. The M2 is over the 05 and M205 may be at 90 degrees to the five-figure number. This stamping is more often than not quite light and difficult to identify. Paint stripper is you friend here. Ask the seller for this info.

Does the car have the original engine? Its possibly a resto job if it does.

Wayne

nah the engine is a 1275, the concern is that the plate reads shadow blue however the engine bay is green which looks very old and original, the body colour is a modern colour like a midnight blue i think.

Usually it'd be engine bay original colour and body different but stranger things have happened. I would be checking the rad shroud.

Ok. More Detective stuff. With the discrepancy in the colours then do exactly what Tomtom says and get the body no. fm the shroud. that way at least you will know where you stand. if its not 500 or so less then its a plate fm another car and you have a different proposition on your hands.

Another thing, all Deluxe bodies as with Australain manufcatured Cooper S have the shaped front beaver panel (as does Min K and Morris mini Minor variants). Cars before March 1965 all have evenly rounded beaver panels at the outer quarters.

Also all the Morris 850s had the magic wand gearlever and a hole in the body appropriate. This car may have been an 'upgrade' to Deluxe many years ago. stranger things have happened!

Yell out if you need anything else. I'd be interested to know the outcome.

Wayne
