It depends what your rods are like.
The set I just fitted went straight in, perfect fit.
The previous set I polished .001" off.
Some people just press them in, like the big J rod bolts all are.

[edit] I just measured a new bolt, register size = .3750" dia.

Doc / Matt, just a question on the 'fit' of the bolt.
I've read that the bolts need to be a 'press' fit. If they are loose the cap can move around and hence bearing clearances will change. What is the press fit? It's not and interference fit so I'm assuming the bolt and hole are the same size?

I'd say (my rule of thumb) that fit required is from `size to size' to .0005" (1/2 a thou) tight.
I agree, you don't want them loose.
