I know this is probably a question asked alot but im planning some down the track mods.

Im wanting opinion and experiences between twin su's and webber carbs. Im wanting to experiment with a webber but wondering if there is much/any power gain over twin su's. i would also like to know fuel consumption issues.

The engine:
1100S motor bored out to 1380, RE-13 cam, Non modified head ( Just purchased a Stage 3 12G1316 head) LCB extractors, Hif44 single carb.

Use:
I use my mini as an everyday driver but would also like it to perform well for track days etc.

I have just finished posting a question about the 1100s block. Was the 1100S block fine with the 1380 rebore?

In relation to your post I have a webber, on a 1098 a bit over the top for mine, it's thirsty and a little noisey.

webbers if jetted right is far more powerful then a std carbie 1 reason is with a webber u have instant power were as a carbie has a slight delay

My engine was re-bored by the previous owner. However to my knowledge there are no problems to doing this. Mine runs great.

Whats the re13 like in that motor in terms of low down torque?

The Weber will produce nearly the same power as twin SU's there might be one or two hp in it ..

But the weber is easier to tune ( a large range of jets and parts are readily avaliable )

and as for your question about fuel consumption ... remember this .. A motor use the same amount of fuel to make its power .. be it through a weber , a single su , twins ... what ever

any porly tuned carbureter will use more fuel ..
stick a weber on you will love it but get the thing tuned :D

Stick with the HIF44, they make more power than a weber, are more economical, and are much quieter.

I like webers over s.u's but that's a personal thing, be different and throw a set of bike carbs on it I haven't seen anyone do that on a mini yet.

The HIF44 will be ample for that engine, and what's great about it is you already have it.

webers v's SU is always debated, upshot is there's no real difference. I prefer SU's. For a 1380, keep your HIF44

good compared to others, but if you want low down torque get GR to do you an RE83, doesn't rev like a 13, but magic torque. I did the swap from 13 to 83 a few years ago, 83 suits me better. It's best to ring GR and discuss your driving style and what you want to do with the car.

edit: I prefer the 83, not the 13!

I like the HIF44 - I have one on my mini. It works under a range of conditions.

The webber's downfall is that it needs to be jetted and tuned for a specific purpose (such as a race track ). Outside of the purpose it was jetted for it will cough and splutter but will be very lusty when the engine is at the range for which its was tuned for.

However, as said, there is little or no difference at the end of the day in terms of performance or power output.

The HIF44 just simply makes the car easier to drive under nomal circumstances.

If I had a race car on a race track then I would want a webber on it. For a road car I would again choose the HIF44.

My 1412 stroker made 113.6HP on GR's engine dyno with a single HS4 SU on a GR 7" manifold, and 114HP with a 45 Dellorto and 38mm chokes in it.
But the SU got 112 lb/ft torque, the Dellorto only managed 108...
Same head, cam, dizzy and zorst.

On a road car a Weber or Dellorto is noisier than an SU, uses more fuel, and gives less torque. But I still like 'em, as they sound great & stay in tune. 8)
You also don't need to worry whether you have the 1/700 SU needle that is perfect for your motor... :roll:

As for the instant power comment above, you can stand hard on the throttle of an SU at idle and it'll GO. Do this with a Weber and it will fart, chug, maybe spit back, and be a PITA until it's on cam. A weber throttle is NOT an ON/OFF switch, you need to feed the baby gently until near 3000 rpm.

so nobody has driven an alfa ( i know dirty word ) with factory webers ?

as said before properly tuned they dont fart cough ... but if they are jetted wrong :roll:

My Moke has a 45DCOE on a standard 1275 A+, with 36mm chokes.
She's nasty to get off the line but awesome for squirting around once you've got the air speed (revs) up.

Having said that, the next A series I have will have an SU.

Thanks for the replys. So what im hearing is that my HIF44 is actually a really god carb. I might keep that on then (save a bit of money for the body work) Shame the single HIF44 doesnt look as good as a webber or twin SU's. Im running the carb on a minispares heated inlet manifold similar to the one below. Are there many inlet manifolds much better than this or are the differences minimal.
