Just wondering how much power one would expect from a 1275 (oversize if need be), standard crankshaft, with about 10.5 to 1 compression ratio and a kent 286 md cam.

cheers :!:

if everything is set up properly, 60-65bhp at the wheels

but those kent cams are pretty old grinds now, there are several street cams that make better and more usable power

I found the 286 it pretty hopeless around town (ie below 3K). Mine worked really well higher up the rev band so I would suggest your experience would depend on the flow capacity of your head/carbs... and how/where you intend to drive it

Cheers, Ian

Around town driving is a consideration.
I would like something that I can take through the mountains and open her up a little bit, and have a heap of power at my disposal.

simon k, would you recommend anything?

I would like the magical "100hp" at the flywheel.
and as a dream, 75hp at the wheels, without sacrificing driveability.
Would obtaining a stroked crankshaft help with this wish?

The cylinder head will have sufficient reshaping and modification to support the flow. I would estimate a 120-130cfm head would be done for this engine, and fuelled by an 1 3/4 inch SU carburettor as to help with the driveability and 'originality'.

Certainly achievable with that cam. I'm running a 286MD in my 1360, and it is very driveable at all rpm considering the specs of the cam, but really doesn't get moving until 3000rpm plus. But once you get there it pulls pretty hard through 7000rpm or more.

It is a bit lumpy down low which is a bit annoying if you get stuck in slow moving traffic.

Personally for a road car I think the 276MD would be better. Maybe it produces less overall hp but if it does it at a lower rpm it makes for a more versatile engine. Next time I have my engine out I might think about changing it - but only because my driving style doesn't really warrant the 286 in the first place

I re-ringed a 1380 for a bloke years ago and fitted a 286 cam, with stock S forged rockers and a bit of head porting it made over 100HP at the crank on GR's dyno. Carbs were twin HS4s I think.

As said by others, it's not a nice traffic cam, you can get more HP and torque from later cams without the need to rev the tits orf it.. sporty cams have come a long way since Vizard did the MD286....

I agree with above comments on the 286 performance, my 1310 Cooper S with MD286 was dynoed with 70HP ATW many years ago with my first head which sadly cracked but with the latest head is now only getting 65-68 ATW. Most likely due to different dynos and the demise of Super fuel? Running twin 1 1/2" SU's
I now have a GR cam which seems to be similar in performance, maybe a little better? :)
Still around 68HP.

I have an RE83, before I put the supercharger on, it was great - very torquey. Still using it

if you want to drive in the mountains, you want to be able to slow down for a corner, then punch out of it - that's torque

like I always say, go to an engine builder (like GR) and tell them what you want to do with the car, they should be able to recommend the right setup for it
