Is it an easy enough job to replace the front engine plate to block gasket with the engine in the car, or is it easier with the engine out? I replaced all the other engine gaskets except for that one when the engine was out of the car. I now have an oil leak coming from the area at the bottom of the timing cover. :x

It's easy to do in the car, just don't disturb the rubber 1/2 moon engine/gearbox seal that's sitting behind it... :wink:
Makes sure the leak isn't from there, and not the gasket.

Make sure its not a leaking crank seal - caused by tightening the timing chain cover bolts (or just having them a bit tight) before the crank pulley in installed...

It's not the crank seal, as it's dry just under that. I always centre the timing cover with the pulley when installing. It's definately coming from the bottom of the timing cover/engine plate area.
I guess I should have replaced ALL the gaskets when the engine was out. I had to learn the hard way.

At least it can be replaced in the car then.

Most time a leak there is NOT the engine plate gasket, it is a leak from the 1/2 moon seal, which dribbles out then runs down the plate and drips off...
I doubt you can replace the 1/2 moon seal with the motor on the box, however if you can see where it's leaking from, clean it with thinners, then gun some silicone gasket sealant in there. :wink:
[edit] do this with the plate off, you won't see the problem otherwise.
