Fitted the lightened & balanced flywheel and orange dot clutch to Laingy's 1377 stroker motor.

Hi Kevin,
Is lightening and balancing a task you always complete for your new projects? I am tempted just to get my motor going back together but am trying to be patient and plan to lighten the flywheel and then get the harmonic balancer, crank and flywheel dynamically balanced.

For a general road car which I hope to have enough power to be punchy when I needed but cruise along nicely also is this something that is recommended :?

I would not build a performance motor with a standard flywheel. Lightening them really does help acceleration in the lower gears.
If a motor will accelerate uphill, it will accelerate even faster uphill with a lighter flywheel.:P
Having said thi,s I draw the line at fitting ultra light steel ones for the road. They are best kept for track use IMO.

If you lighten a standard flywheel and/or backplate, re-balancing is essential as grey cast iron is not a homogenous material. It has light and heavy spots in it.

Cheers Kevin,
I am going to lighten the flywheel myself, I won't be going too crazy with it though and then get the the whole lot balanced I think.

Thanks again!

Fitted a passenger side bullet mirror. Seriously took 4 hours, it was ridiculous. So hard to tighten those bolts up right inside the door.

Would be interested to see what you've done here and how. Could you put up a thread in the In Car Entertainment section?

I'm interested in the concept of talking in a mini

I've got bluetooth in my new mini project and I got an incoming call for the first time the other day and couldn't hear a thing over the noise. :?

I have a JVC bluetooth kit in my mini and the microphone is mounted between the sun visor and door.. It works sometimes due to the noise, Having the carb sitting in the dash does not help.

Yes yes, you both have loud cars. I was more interested in Brett's heritage-friendly solution to a modern requirement rather than how efficiently your cars turn petrol in to noise.

Brett, my mate has recently taken on a Morris 1100 which is bog standard. He likes the Granny look and respects the heritage of the car - no Zeemax bodykits or cut-and-shut nose jobs or stickers on the roof and all that malarkey.

It currently has a BMC AM radio which he'd love to get doing audio and Bluetooth. Would love it if you shared your ideas.

I got my fuel gauge back in the blue one. Voltage regulator was shot so I swapped it out for a different one. That took up the entire 2 hours I could spend on my cars this weekend.

I am also interested in non-visible solutions to adding audio to a mini. I'd like to have some form of radio or music player in my cars.

OK, First off I sent the radio to http://nostalgicwireless.com.au/ They removed the insides and updated it to AM- FM -AUX cable.. it swiches by a tiny 3 way toggle switch, that I have mounted on the Centre binnacle.

Then I bought this from my local Betta Home Living store http://www.belkin.com/au/IWCatProductPa ... _Id=530115

I have a smiths Tacho mounted on the front parcel shelf.. I fitted it behind the tacho housing, It comes with self adhesive To activate it, you simply tap the back of the tacho housing... And select the AUX on the BMC diamond dot radio...

My Cooper S is quiet. I have fitted it with so much Dyno matting, and 3layer sound proofing,

Is there a way you can check if your fuel gauge/ voltage regulator or fuel sender is shot?
Mine stopped working last week, Before that it the gauge never showed full when the tank was full.

Yes, with a multi meter. I disconnected the wires at the sender on the tank. When I measured the resistance across the sender terminals I got about 9 Ohms. The tank is brimming and the senders I have seem to range about 20 Ohms full and about 300 Ohms empty. Actually this sender is the lowest resistance at full of any I have come across. I was worried it may be drawing too much for the regulator.

Then I checked that the wire in the back of my gauge was the same one a connected to the sender as one was Green-Black and the other Black-Green  . I did this with a long peice of wire and checking continuity on the meter. Beep meant the harness was made by the devil but still working.

Then I measured the voltage at the regulator. There are B and I markings. With the body of the regulator earthed and ignition on, one should read battery voltage and the other should read 10 Volts. Mine read zero.

I grabbed another off a spare speedo and swapped the wires over then tried the new one. My digital meter flickered as the regulator did its thing but it was near enough to 10V (DC setting on meter).

Put it all back together and the needle came up like it had just taken a blue pill.

I think I may have blown up the regulator when driving with the speedo hanging out of the binnacle as I tried to diagnose the lack of speedo worky. Maybe the fuel gauge terminals shorted to earth in the dash rail?
