A good way (rough) way to tell the age of a moke, to me the obvious features go like this, from early to late:

Really early mokes, don't have guard extensions, on the side or the back panel - Look at my car, it's a 66, Mattsmadmini is a 67. Compare the sides of our cars to all the others posted

High back seats came in 72, but they are quite often changed, lowbacks installed illegally etc

The earlier half of mokes, all have solid front panels. As Bnicho said, removable grille came in late 70's

Late mokes were galvanised. Can't really tell this without seeing the bare metal, but lots of gal mokes i've seen, the paint doesn't stick so well, so you can clearly see the 'galvanised' bare metal.

Galvanizing is a zinc hot dip process at about 400C. We had a big galvanizing plant where I worked (Rheem).
If you dropped a Moke body in it, it would curl up & warp.

They called the late Mokes galvanised but they were not really. They were just fabricated out of zinc electrocoated steel (called `zincseal' these days).

There is a couple of types of galvanising HOT DIP, ELECTRO GALVANISING
Most of us think of galvanising as the hot dip process However Zinc Plating is also called electro galvanising
Most Mokes that are regarded as Galvanised Have the side screen that bolts to the side of the screen frame, Not the Front, Also the screen surround is much longer on the sides than the earlier type

And then there's PDJ's metal protection method of daubing lead paint on all the rust.

This was my CAMS Open Sports Car log-booked, Cooper S powered, Californian (rear fuel tank) Moke hillclimber that I campaigned during the late '80s. To be eligible to compete as an Open Sports Car it needed doors and extend wheel arches, bumper bars and such like. It was never popular with other Open Sports Car competitors, but it was very successful. :D
Lots of drilled holes and alloy, I think it weighed in at about 520kg.

Not From Me....

Good afternoon All,

Just to give you a quick note on new and exciting updates in the world of Mokes. We have signed a development and production agreement with Chery Automotive/Sicar Engineering to bring the Moke back to full production. We have started a new facebook page http://www.facebook.com/pages/Moke-Inte ... 6597008314 so you can follow the development of the new Moke and we will be posting updates weekly. We have also launched a new website www.mokeinternational.com . It is currently just a landing page while the site is being built. I know the first question is when are the Mokes going to be avaialbe for sale in Australia? You'll have to sign up to the facebook or Moke International page to get more details in the near future.

In regard to parts, we currently have 3 containers on the water to re-stock our supply of seats, rubber selection, wheels and bumpers. They will start arriving in mid August and I will let everyone know exact dates once I get confirmation from the shipping companies.

Thanks again to everyone for their buisiness and if we can be of assistance in the near future, we would be happy to help.

Have a great weeekend.

Best regards,

Paul

Take one shagged 78 californian. Rusted in every panel, swollen lap joints, clapped out engine and box. Nice new black top.

Image

And another shagged late moke. This one had floors made of gutter repair foil, tin sheet, rivets and paint.
Image

Combine with a rust free but joy-ridden 82 4-seater body that had been white before the dodgy blue.
Image

And add scaffolding
Image

Then replace bits from the assorted cars and drop in an MG Metro motor and MX5 seats.

It looks a little sand blasted these days as the sticky tyres have thrown a lot of gravel at the front of the rear guards.

Currently engineless and minus a fuel tank.

fiddle sticks yeah mokesta, that thing looks great.

I think the brown seats really set it off, if they were black it would just look like a cali to me, but this looks much better
