My May/June 1961 build 850 has a (silver) face speedo and white binnacle. I assume it is original. Our original May/June 1962 is the same (silver/white).

Evan.

The very early Mini 850 The speedo surround was Black in colour and not made of plastic from memory.
The speedo had the white or silver face
The model I am talking about also had Black kick plate
with an aluminium surround on the front of the doors.,

Yep I had one, real early 1961, my 1st Mini- it had the Pommy tube framed seats in it too. It was previously owned by a mechanic at J E Allen (BMC dealer) at Dural.

Were the door check straps different too John, I seem to remember they were... :?
[edit] now I think about it, I'm pretty sure they were leather.

John, the very early ones were made of card, almost like paper mache.

However, it was the same colour as the later plastic ones.

The surround I am talking about was off a '59 demonstrator imported to australia for dealerships to drum up sales.

You are correct Kev the 850 door check strap was not made out of seat belt webbing
There was also an aftermarket door check listed as an genuine part that kept Your door open, when you wanted it kept open, this has been off the market for a while
I have recently had these made
