Through 61 and early 62 there was quite a few small changes taking place on the 850's.
So I would like help to place the changes. So that all of us will be able to refer to this when needed. As a lot of Car's turn up with a lot of unknowns.

eg. We have Car No, 8238..
Mini_Fanatic Car No, 5173
It has a fresh air vent hole (with a cover over it)
We have a Car No, 2974..
It has no vent hole
So if you have a car with a vent hole, with a lower Number than 8238 or
a car with a higher Number than 2874 with No hole, please let me know.

I think this will be the easiest way to handle this. This will need help from all 850 owners, more so from early owners.

If people are interested, we would list the items that we know changed, (like the eg. listed above).

I know of about 40 changes but there will be More!!.

A couple more to try to see if this is all going to work.

One piece roof lining ..Car Number..60542
Two piece roof lining..Car Number..41747

I don't think this kind of information is available to Mini owners.
Lets try to answer some of the unknowns

Car No. 5173 has fresh air heater hole (with cover).

Car No. 12178 has rectangle slots in roof gutter.

From sports850's register, both of these cars were built May/June, 1961 an 1962 respectively.

I have a very early 61 austin seven that i can check on my car with. When you mean fresh air hole do you mean the plate on the firewall??

C290 Front Shock Absorbers.... Increased length ferrules to reduce noise. Armtrong Shocks with longer ferrules were introduced at Car Serial No. YMA2S1/54948.

After reading your serial Number 51216 dated 6.11.64 it makes me wonder when my Car number 60542 was made?
We will not adjust the number on our list yet, would like to get a car with said fitted roof lining.

The dates are the date that the Service Bulletin was released, not the date of the production change.

Car 60542 would have been some time around January 66.
That is the highest number I have seen for an 850.
The info I have said there was 60188 cars produced when production ended in January 66.
Your car would have been the 60042nd one made. So it was one of the last days of production.

How would your bible go on production date for our Car number...9/28832/756. This is getting of the rail a bit.

I do believe what we are trying to do, is needed when trying to put back together a Car that has not come with all original bits.

I don't know the ages exactly but I have seen

YMA2S1 110525/11702 and it has two piece head lining, english number plate, a fresh air hole in the firewall and rectangular slots in the roof gutter.

I have this car in the shed:

YMA2S1 35443 and it has two pice head lining, australian number plate, a fresh air hole in the firewall and two small holes in the roof gutter.

Can anyone tell me the ages of these cars?

Car Number..11702 around May 62
Car Number...35443 around May 63

That one would be very early, I would say January/February 61, just after production started.
The 9 on the start of the number was only on the early cars.
The 28832 was the British car number.
The 756 is the Australian car number.
The first car was car 501 so your car is really the 256th car off the line.

I am only an amateur when it comes to identifying 850s.

A clue for dating these cars, they made just over 60000 of them over a five year period.
5 years = 60 months. So they produced an average of 1000 cars a month.

But they made more cars a month in the the first four years and it slowed down in the last year (after the release of the Mini Deluxe in March 65)

But as a rule of thumb the 1000 a month is a pretty good guide.

My fresh air hole has a cover made by some company called "Decor".
