My mini has been sitting for a few weeks and I usually start it up each week to keep engine turned over etc. but ran out of fuel the last time. I've refilled tank but car cranks but doesn't start. Has splattered a few times but won't start.

Any tips to prime it start it?

Electric pump or manual pump ???

If its a manual pump then a few squirts of "startya" spray will get it going so that the engine vaccuum and the pump will prime and it should run. If its an electric pump then you have to get the points working and it will then self prime.

Can I use throttle body and carby cleaner? Just seeing what I have around the shed.

I usually just prime the carby with petrol.
On a normal SU I undo the lid of the float bowl, clean out the dirt and add some fresh petrol. I then make sure the needle valve isn't stuck, whack the lid back on and start it up.

On a HIF SU I just fill the carby with a big syringe or a small funnel by removing the hose from the pump to the carby.

Okay - now when the car is stopped find out why the fuel bowl is empty. Once the car has stopped and cooled, run your fingers around the bottom of the fuel bowl to see if you can get petrol traces on your fingers. Commonly its the rubber grommet seal on the wire coated fuel line that goes into the carby proper.

The rubber grommet hardens and cracks letting the fuel drain out - its almost never a constant drip but a very slow leak. You should get petrol stains on your fingers if that is the case.

The fix ?? A new jet and pipe are not that expensive and it comes with a new grommet on it.
