Jeeez.............. pink, blue, green, they sure know how to get money off you guys. I think we are reasonably lucky here. My 72 GT has had its rego 'on hold' for about 10 years now. This means the rego stays active as long as the form gets submitted in time (before the expiry date - yearly). Once I have it going again, I go down to my local garage and get a 'Warrant of Fitness'. This is a quick check of the car to make sure everything fitted works properly and there is no rust in important places. Cost $NZ35. Go and pay the annual rego fee cost $NZ200.10 (why the 10 cents only a bureaucrat could answer) and it's back on the road. Now the big one,,,,,,,,,,and I don't agree with this, but don't get me started on it............
insurance is NOT compulsory here so for a cost of $235.10 the car will be roadworthy and legal again. BTW, the WOF is valid fpr 6 months only.
A lot of stupid f@ckers let their rego lapse (do nothing for 12 months after expiry) and then it costs at least $500 to be re-vinned and an incredibly thorough check - sounds like your blue slip.
My little 76 roundie is a couple of weeks away from the road, but the rego was let expire by the previous owner. I'll pick up a set of 'live plates and ID tag (I know where there is a set), pop them on the car and off for a WOF - no problem, Save myself at least $460!!!!
Work that system!!!!

OK, so over there in NZ if 3rd party insurance is not compulsory, what happens if you kill or injure somebody- do they sue your a$$ in court, or is there some other protection?

Here, you don't by law need any other insurance (but you then take the risk on damage to property... not good if you total someone's Roller or Ferrari!)

We have this 'wonderful' ACC (Acciident Compensation Scheme) which when passed into law, we gave up the right to sue for injuries sustained and the ACC give a lump sum compensation payment for your injuries. Problems arise when an uninsured driver hits another insured car. Then the insurance companies try and retrieve the costs from the individual at fault. Usually, they have 2 hopes - Bob Hope and No Hope of getting anything. Soapbox time.......
This stupid situation means a 15 year old can, with 6 months driving experience, go and buy a Suburu WRX, fill it with mates and sheilas and wrap it around a lampost - or as recently happened, crash off the side of a bridge into the biggest river in the country. The driver escaped, but the 3 girls were drowned. He was 18 I think.
OK, I'm off the box now.
