I started to get the Moke ready.
One job you can do on a Moke is to set the clutch throw stop single handed. Stand on the clutch and screw in the big clutch nut at the same time! I set the return stop and throw stop per the manual then gave the clutch a bleed. I also bled the clutch on the mini as the hose wasn't tight and it had been weeping.
Then I bled the front brakes on the Moke. Just a preparatory round to get it so the Wife didn't have to hang around too long. Then I went to the back but very little fluid would come out of the right rear. It spurted out some black stuff and then stopped. I stood on the brake pedal and
SQUIRT the right rear flexible brake hose lost its load all over the wheel arch! I'm glad that didn't happen on the road! The cylinders were sticky too and the bores a bit sad.
Luckily I had some new hoses and rear cylinders so I changed the rears out. With Wifey's help the brakes bled up beautifully. I adjusted the rears and the handbrake.
Back on the ground for the first time in ages, I had to keep checking the ride was right and tyres inflated. It has been up on stands so long, it looks too low now.
She started easily but when I went for reverse - Crunch. Clutch pedal needs a few pumps to get a gear. I tried to bleed it with a neighbour's help but it kept pumping air out. I suspect the slave cylinder seal is stuffed. The master appears fine.
I took it for a test drive anyway and there are no oil or water leaks, the Dr Mini rack is great, it idles better, the exhaust isn't blowing, the carby doesn't hit the firewall, there isn't any oil smoke... wonderful.
BUT - there is still a miss. Maybe it is the NGK plugs. Maybe it is something linked to the tacho not working but probably it is the dodgy FACET pump which was never right from the day I bought it.
To make myself feel better, I took the mini for a burn. It too doesn't like to get a gear. It suffers a serious loss of revs when the clutch goes in. There is something amiss with the carby on light throttle, it feels & sounds like only one side is drawing. Full load is a blast!! it sounds and goes great. I can't drive it as is though, that loss of revs is scary. The Moke had an orange dot and Matt Read flywheel too and it doesn't lose revs at all with clutch depressed.
So a sad day really. Wife is p1ssed that I spent the day in the shed and I still don't have a car I can drive.
I'm going to rob the fuel pump out of the mini to see if that is the problem and try to buy a clutch slave during the week.
