Hi all,

I have a 1978 LS1275 Clubman. Currently ripping out the internal guts of the car. It's all original interior. The dash storage area has the typical fake black leather and glued to the firewall also.

The fake black leather has what look like a sisal type backing and has deteriorated over the years. A lot of it is now like a powder. While taking the dash out and as dust was filling the car, the thought crossed my mind of asbestos but I very much doubt this would be the case.

Am I just being stupid, wait don't answer that !

No asbestos was used in Minis. Apart from in engine gaskets...

I have another question, this one is on the wiring loom. I have managed to get most of the wiring loom all into the engine bay. I have labeled all wires and I was hoping to get it all out in one piece. However, stuck a snag, where without chopping it in half or removing all wires one by one I'm not going to get it out in one piece. It's threaded through a small cavity in the bay.

I will be replacing the whole loom anyway but thought it would be better for an auto electrician to have the loom there, whole, as a template. Should I just chop it in half and be done with it!

Brake linings?

As an aside, treat any unknown dust like it is hazardous and any liquid like it is carcenogenic (cancer causing) or worse.

It doesn't apply for the seat back obviously but for example the car could have been on a building site while the owner was cutting AC sheeting and the fine layer of powder embedded in the carpet is toxic.. etc.

The loom will come out, just as it went in once. Just be gentle as it comes through a few wires at a time. Remove the largest plugs which won't fit using a thin tool to release the individual wires that make up the plug internally.

The loom is in 2 pieces.. You will have to disconnect the rear section first. Also I pulled mine through from the engine bay into the cabin when removing it..

Yep, I disconnected the rear loom from the engine bay first, just below the passenger side wiper and just pushed that back inside through the firewall into the cabin. That's as far as I have got with the rear loom.

Do you have any advice from there on the rear loom? Keep in mind I am replacing the complete vehicle loom. This is a complete knock down job, removing everything from the car, soda blasted, engine rebuild.

Its called a good pair of sissors... I ended up getting the shits with mine, and chopped it.. some came out through the front bit hole, the other bit came through the rear section.. But don't worry, for some reason it seems to go back in nice and easy when the new one goes in..

Hi Dave,

The rear loom will come out with some pulling and kind words.
You will need to remove the hood lining if not already, and then it is possible to pull the loom up through the front pillar, after that the rest is easy. For the front I managed to get mine out into the engine bay and you may need to cut the tape and pul through individual wires but the hole in the front firewall is quite large so it will all fit through. And no I didnt cut any wires

No not at all. You called it a LS1275 and I was wondering if it was a proper 1275LS or a ring in...
