we are running out of quality 1100"S" blocks & so the A+ blocks will have to be used ... & if they have to be sleeved then so be it,,, at least then we can use them :-)

Are there any disadvantages of using a sleeved block on a hi-po application? Eg K-headed turbo?

not these days,,, in the old days the sleeves (or some of them) would become loose & literally rattle & commonly caused head-gasket problems etc etc etc , poor design & poor fitment

these days (however) they`re (sleeves) a far better quality both in design & fitment & also in quality of materials,,, so a sleeved block isn`t such a bad thing at all & some race-engine-builders actually prefer a sleeved block for the sake of better ring sealing & bore-integrity

all the big power engines in UK use A+ blocks.... shouldn't make a scrap of difference

hee hee,,, they use them simply because they stuffed & sold & ruined & thrashed all the early ones they had & hardly have any early strong ones left now :-) so of course they`re going to use A+ blocks for their race engines,,, they have no choice :-)

& yes , if an A+ """isn`t""" sleaved,,, then it probably should be :-)

Yeah I used to say that too, and I agree, in my experience maaany of the earlier A+ castings were porus (heads and blocks) and the quality of the casting was pretty poor over all....

Having said that,,, I have recently done machining on a whole lot of late A+ stuff (1995 onwards) and I would actually stick my neck out and say if anything, the quallity of the casting in the later stuff is probably actually better than the A series stuff  I can't honestly complain about porousity or core shift in the late stuff I've just been working on.

The heads in particular (casting methods aside), they would have been expensive to produce, there was a lot more machining operations in them I noticed......

I don't know specifically when they started improving, or even if stuff I've been working on were just all "wednesday castings", but I do know I'm not as quick to dismiss the A+ stuff anymore (not that I ever really did anyway, but ya know what I mean) :)

How can you determine the age of one?

Engine number, or block features.
eg the later manual A+ blocks have a spin-on filter straight onto the block, and no filter in the usual place.
Late auto A+ blocks have no oilway drilling from the regular filter housing pad up into the main gallery. Makes it harder (but not impossible) to convert to manual box use.

Regarding 1100S/1300 auto blocks, there is nothing wrong with automatic ones for either road or race use. However the block needs oilway mods to work on a manual box (because on an automatic, the transmission feeds filtered oil up to the engine).
See my sticky thread at top of the mods forum.

There are quite a few auto blocks sitting about as doorstops, and many are still standard bore.
