I was a driving instructor 20 odd years ago and I reckon you would be better using the instructors car. There was also talk several years ago of Vicroads testers refusing to use 2 door cars for safety reasons, not sure if this is still the case or not, so you may get a tester who refuses to use the Mini, there are quite a few other requirements for the test car as well, like mirrors, safety belts etc. have a read of the link below.

Thanks for all the responses and comments. I'm intending to do it in the instructor's car (hopefully not booked already). I think I've had the feeling underneath that a Mini might be pushing it since the start! I've got a few more lessons, so I'm hoping I'll get better! I could drive okay, just adjusting to different gears/pedals etc will take practice. I hope to get a "modern manual" in the not-to-distant future - very different to a fifty year old Mini!

Thanks again for the tips, advice and stories,
Evan.

As a bit of a follow up, there was no issues with the speedo accuracy for the test. Unfortunately, my instructor was busy when I had my booking, so I had to use the Mini. Fortunately, both the Mini and I passed!

The speedo has the KPH sticker on it, so converting isn't an issue.

Congratulations on passing your test, Evan, and I'm really glad you ended up taking it in the Mini. (Probably made the tester's day! He or she is probably still bragging about that to his/her mates.) It will be something that you can brag about forever, too. Well done!

Thanks Tony!

The tester did jokingly asked whether he'd fit in the Mini!

I don't know whether it's just me/my experience, but I found the test to be a lot more relaxed/less strict than all of the build up online and in VicRoads info etc.

Now everyone at school (including teachers) is waiting for me to drive the Mini to school! Unfortunately I have some paperwork and a meeting before I can do that.

Statistics say I've gone from the most safe to the most unsafe group of drivers. I'd like to get myself in a safer new MINI!

Evan.
