Hey , wondering what the difference would be between an Aus built Mini, circa 1970 , from build date to Delivery date?

I think, correct me if I am wrong, but the date stamp (Month/Year) on the complience plate is generally months away from when the car was actually built? How many months would you think?

This topic may have been covered before, but thought someone might be reading and know.

Thanks!

Compliance plate was fitted when dispatched to the dealer I believe. So there could be days, weeks or even months (for some models) between the 2 dates.
Morris1100 would shed more light here...

..and then the car sits in the car yard for a while and can be first registered months later making a 68 built mini a 69 model because it didn't get registered until the following year. (this happened to mine, so do you call it a '68 or a '69?) Interesting subject and made more difficult by the lack of a build date stamp on the plate on the early models.

Hey Jim

I don't think it is all that complicated a '68 car first registered in '69 is a '68 car. Take an extreme example., I go in and buy a '68 car but don't register it until this year, does that make it a 2012 car ? It plainly can't work like that so a '68 car is always a '68 car.
another example is when car dealers have a sale of last years models, buying that 2011 car in 2012 doesn't make it a 2012 model.

Cheers
Steve

The reason I ask is one of my cars has 7/70 on compliance plate. I did a vehicle history check through rta last night and it says it was built Jan 1970.

So I guess I have found an actual build month.
7 months from build to road , via SPO fitting then .

Anyone else had experience with Rta vehicle history check?

Cheers.

Only that its very guarded these days.

Once upon a time you could pay the money and get a complete history but because of privacy laws, thats no longer.

Tracing the history of my car was that I got an annecdotal history from a friendly RTA worker who told me that it had had three registered owners before I aquired it and re-registered it both on full registraion and then on Historic plates. No more specific information than that.

Mike

Often if the RTA do not know the month of the build, they use Jan as the default. You will notice new cars have the month and year of build on the build plate and the month and year of compliance on the compliance plate.

I've owned a couple of Minis that were actually complianced the year before the year on the rego papaers.

eg: an 11/70 Mini van that was registered as a 71.

This is probably what the Dealer put on the forms when it was registered new in 1971 and since it had never been rerergistered it was never picked up.

I've also seen lots of cars where the build date is much older than the compliance date. eg: a 12/07 built Nissan sold in Aus new in 2009 with a 01/09 compliance plate. In that case the authorities will work off the compliance plate, not the build plate anyway.

Ok then, I now know not to take anything from the Rta as gospel!

Has any one had a positive outcome from FOI act enquiry? I have read some good outcomes from other makes on other forums.

Thanks for all your input!

I did an RTA FOI on my 1970 MK II S so as to get documentary evidence that it was ex-NSW Police. Had a call from a guy in the RTA records section who used to work for BMC. He was very sympathetic to my request, understood why I was doing it but said they simply don't have the records from the early 1970's. They were destroyed some time in the 1980's, perhaps when they moved to a new records system. My FOI fee was refunded.

The AOMC supposedly have the old card system from the Victorian Government (VicRoads) but it only contains the info that would be recorded on a registration (ie eng no, body no etc) but not owners details.

The AOMC actually has the ownership details. They are just not allowed to give that info out. :)

Copied directly from the AOMC site
