My understanding as well. But bikes don't (or at least didn't) comply with the same emissions regs.

This is one of the more interesting conversions to me but the lack clarity around these issues and the fact there are so few around leaves me cautious.

Tis why it needs to be registered to be worth anywhere near what he is asking for it. He needs to remove that "what if" from the equation. Or even get the blue slip and be at the transport office with the buyer and register it before the cash is handed over for the car.

ok, i have to admit, i`d love to see a "Legal" bike engined mini running around (or a few dozen :-) )

so,,, i`m going to ask my Dtp engineer to give me the duck-nuts on this subject once & for all

he`s the very very very very best in Qld & i guarantee he will sort it out

please wait, won`t be long,

:-)

he`s coming over here shortly anyways to sort one of my Monaco-fastback conversions & another customers seat brkts so i`ll corner him on this bike engine thing once & for all

stay tuned :-)

Been planning an R1 mini for a while, was never 100% sure that it could be complianced, was amazed to stumble across this car whilst casually browsing eBay (as one does), have been contemplating buying it but figure the 12k reserve is a bit much considering the overall roughness, I reckon I'd have to spend quite a few dollars getting it to what I'd want... Would seriously consider it if the price was around 8k, might try to haggle with him once the auction ends... Suspect I won't be alone in this :o

bike engine cars can be regod just no one has. its no different to any other engine conversion. main point will be nosie (in car and external from chain drive and emissons (any good dyno operator should be able to tune to pass im240 test).i'm currently building r1 powered mini and will be using promotive kit and have run project passed engineer and he dosent have any problem other then the above which he said we can work on solutions for. i'm also doing disc brakes, coil overs, bias peal box etc etc. but is long term project over the next 18 months. so far i have the shell stripped ready for all the rust repairs once i get going on it i post up a build diary. it can be done but not half arsed like this one looks.

Which Engineer are you using Shorty? I'm looking at starting a conversion soon but haven't looked for an engineer locally yet.

Cheers

Dicko.

my engineer is in orange nsw as i have lived there for the past 10 years and sorted of go the ball rolling while there. and ive only moved back to newcastle in the last few months and figure taking the car out to him is going to be a good excuse to keep in contact with all my friends. also he has over 12 month of advance bookings already. he is currently overseeing some sweet rides that will start to show people what can be done within the rules if you put in the time and do things right. i'm sure if you look at the rta website you will find him but i dont think he is taking on new jobs at the moment.

Any word from your DTP engineer Matt?

The more I think about this the more doable it is with the kit. Reverse and a suitable diff arrangement has always been the hurdle and this kit solves those rather well.

Power to weight the R1 is hard to beat. Six speed and gearing will help overcome the lack of torque.

I'm sooo going to build one of these, just not sure when (need the wife's permission to spend the dosh, I'm going to budget around $25-$30k for the entire build, reckon that'll be enough?). Keen to hear what TheMiniMan's QLD engineer has to say about it (I'm based 'up north' so relevant to me)

Surfing around, came across these guys (http://www.flatshifter.com), how awesome would clutchless 'flappy paddle' gear shifts be in a R1 mini??! Ferrari like! 8) Works out to around AUD$2300 + GST and delivery, pretty reasonable really?

I would be inclined to tough it out with a manual shift that is included in the promotive kit.

Perhaps you are right although it would probably need a cat converter and vapour emissions control system too.

Unfortunately in Qld the IM240 test is not yet recognised so it is the full ADR tests or the engine must be in the condition it was in when in the donor vehicle and the donor vehicle must have been proved to pass the ADR emissions.

To me that means in Qld you may be able to use a bike engine IF you can get one that is Euro 3 or 4 compliant AND the Qld authorities accept that your evidence of compliance overseas is valid for the one you bought here. (I am assuming that no bike company has bothered to ADR comply thier bike as they don't have to, where in Europe they have to test to Euro 3. I could be Very wrong)
