Ok I've had a bit of a look around the web and I've found a few options 0.60" 0.80" and GR's 0.100" flat tops.
Are their any others/options up around the 0.100thou area? and by the looks of it GR's pistons are "high performance" pistons, can these be used in forced induction?

Can a 1098 be off set bored (or do they need to be to fit 0.100" pistons)?

Also is their any way to make the large 998 pistons (0.100 & 0.120) work in a 1098 cranked engine?

Give JP Pistons or Special Piston Services a call, they will make you whatever size piston you like.

Hi Kennomini
I have plus .040/.060/ .080/ .100 in for the 1098 and the same for the 998 but i do make a .020 for the 998 the pistons are very high quality and can be used in road or race engines, a lot of these pistons are used in turbo engines running up to 23 lb boost,we had one running at 20lb on 11 to one compression.
May be you should ask david (850man) why he used my pistons in his motor and not JP or special piston services, The JP pistons were prone to cracking and very expencive, the special pistons services are an excellent piston but cost around $1200 to $1400 dollars, so mine at $275 are a good buy,you do not need to off set bore at .100 over size, the reason i only went .100 over size was that the head gasket starts to hang over the bore any bigger than than that.

Last set of JP pistons I bought (+0.040") were less than $200 for the set. Excellent pistons, had them on the shelf. Choice of rings too. Pretty hard to walk past. And they can do them in a Press Fit Gudgeon Pin.

Be careful of some 1100 pistons, the top ring is too close to the crown of the piston and when running in a boosted application, the top ring can get pinched because of this.

Spoke to BOB from JP Pistons today had a good talk about pistons he has lot of pistons semi finished on the shelf and finishes them off as they are ordered,
he only makes small bore pistons to .080 over size but will make them in flat tops, his price is $85 to $90 per piston plus GST plus freight per piston, he sells to the trade less 15% he does not recall selling a set of pistons for less than $200 as quoted by you, also he does not have 3 different set of rings to pick from he only has plain black carbon rings and a one piece oil ring.
Would you PLEASE tell us which 1100 piston is the one to be careful of so no one makes the mistake of putting them in their engine and having them fail.
Also maybe you could tell us what height the top ring should be from the top of the piston so we know what to look for, then i'll show you some of the forced induction pistons i have here and we can compare ring heights.
Also you can explain why the trend is to place the rings so low down on the mini piston and the disadvantage of having them so low.

JP stuff is real good. I used to use their variable timing gears on my Holden Red 6 race motor.

Oh hang on, they weren't supposed to be variable?

Are JP pistons any good, after you had a chat to bob? Not that I'm planning a rebuild but it's interesting to hear the reputations of brands.

Hi 69k1100
If you have a rare engine that you can not find pistons for JP are bound to have them for you just fitted a set to 997 cooper engine, try finding them there working fine.

Hi GR,

I only deal with Peter at JP. I can't speak for them regarding pricing, but that is what I pay. Maybe you don't get as get pricing because you continually make claims like this

that he doesn't wish to do business? I don't know the reason for you having to pay more than anyone else and you'd be best to ask Peter about that.

If 850man did buy your pistons, I find it rather curious that he was so quick to recommend other brands. He is a qualified mechanic and also a qualified engine reconditioner so he knows what he's on about.

Not sure of the brand of 1100 pistons I've seen of late, little on them to identify them by, however the top ring land is closer to the crown than other's I've seen and are not at all forgiving.

The engine reconditioning industry generally know of the problems with JP Pistons and do not use them in performance applications, mostly where other pistons are not available any more.
I know they used to make performance holden V8 pistons that cracked, and one of my Melbourne customers had a successfull claim based on the fact of poor maching quality and alloy strength. Rudy Samperi, Federal Moguls claims engineer can verify this.
As for JP not wanting to deal with myself, they would not have known who they were talking to, as I rang for a price on mini pistons and sizes available, and was informed of the retail price, and was informed of 15% trade discount
If you are able to buy these pistons and rings for less than $200 incl GST and freight, then maybe you should offer them to other forum mini owners to help them out.
My 998 and 1100 pistons and rings are used extensively throughout the world,
Canada, USA, UK, Europe, Belgium, France, Norway, Denmark , NZ etc in high performance and racing applications, infact are a favourite in UK in grass track racing, one of the top engine builders in NZ uses them in mini7 racing, and the list goes on....
maybe I could send you a set of pistons for you to personally evaluate, and then you must pass them on to a member of this forum who is in need of real assistance, maybe that person would like to go racing, but cant afford quality pistons

I'd go for GR's products anyday, we have 2 motors a 998 & 1100 that both have his pistons in them and they are both fantastic little motors that are knocking on the door of 1275 performance.

They are cheap, have had the R&D put into them, its a win win situation as far as in concerned, and you get a cuppa and a biscuit thrown in on the deal.

I hope this is a friendly conversation! Expressions of opinions. Great to learn about other people's experiences with products though.
