Folks,

I have what I thought was an S box. I've had someone send me a message saying they're of the view it is not based on the casing number.

Casing number is 22A1288.

I have no desire to sell someone something that is not what I think it is.

JC

It could be a transitional mk1 s box from around 1968.

If it is the other stamped in number starts with 12FAxxxxx

See the above thread!

It appears correct, except the outputs should be hardy spicer, all the numbers are Cooper S.

Not all Mk1 S boxes got Hardy Spicer outputs. The 1965-66 ones had rubber couplings.

Do all Cooper S boxes have LSD's or are they an option?

None of them

LSDs were available back then for improved production racing as a Special Tuning part.
Not as a factory fitted option.

I thought all the early mk1 s boxes had the 333 case while the very late mk1 transitional boxes were 22a therefore it should have the hardie spicers with the 22a identification.

Would it help to also put up the teeth count for the pinion and crown wheel? That may tell people if it is an S ratio diff.

18/62 is a 3.444 ratio.

Are you the original owner of the box? If not then who knows what it's history is. The case may not be original, I always learnt to tell by the lay gear anyway. I have a few casings that share numbers with mk2 s coopers (from my research) but the laygear tells of their pedestrian nature.

Are hardy spicer unis easy to swap over? I know pot joints use a different side cover.

Pot joints can use a std side cover. But the diff shafts have circlip grooves.

To change to hardy spicers you need S side covers (as the bushes & shafts are 1/8" bigger), S diff output shafts, and S drive flanges & bolts.. New, these bits are NOT cheap.
You can bore some of the Oz made side covers to fit the S bushes as these covers are thicker.

How do I determine that?
