Black is listed in the Berger Paints catalogue of standard production colours for BMC Australia - Berger number HL5131.

It's shown as a 1968 colour but, as already stated, there are a number of known discrepancies between colour and year.

I'll scan the other pages and add to the paint sticky in the next few days - http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=66469.

Just heading down a bit of a side track on the colour black for cars ...
I had a neighbour who had a fairly major panel works in Sydney in the '60s and '70s.
He told me that cars that were to be painted black would be pulled off the assembly line for special finishing. In those days panel pressing was not all that good as can be seen by the ripple pattern on most cars from that era. Black of course will exaggerate every defect, hence the special attention.
He was mostly talking about Holden and Ford products with their larger panel sizes.

I knew there had to be a paint number, otherwise the dealers wouldn't have been able to order it.

That reminds me...

BMC says 1950 to 1968.

Thanks Morris - that answers another question that's been in the back of my mind for some time - where did the numbers after the BMC part number for touch-up paint (HYL3920) originate? I see it's the Berger paint code. :)

I have been looking though some of my more obscure stuff and I think I just found the Dulux number for that Black in a Kellows and Falkiner accessories parts list.
winabbey, does number 2222 come up in any of your stuff?

Not so far, but I'll keep looking.

A Google search brings up the FEFCHolden.org.au Forum which has the following line:

Holden Standard Saloon- Black ----DUCO LAQUER ---#253-6258---B.A.L.M touch-up Ref. No. 286-2222

That is better than I have got! My Dulux books don't list 2222, there is a gap but there is a lot of gaps.

The Kellows list is from 1973, my Dulux books are 1991 and 1995

This thread made me search for some pics of what Brooklands green should like, its an awful lot lighter than my car is! I actually much prefer the "right" colour :)

Here's an original black 850 I found in Snowtown some years back. Its owner (Max) was the second owner, having bought it only a couple of years old. The colour and trim was original.

My car is Tartan red with Black roof as per the English cars. I went to the paint shop and used the code BK1 from the Parnell book on Original Mini Cooper. No matches for BMC but matched up with Leyland. Colour looks pretty accurate. If you can't find the berger colour you could always try that.

Having said that the paint code for my 1958 Lloyd ended up being from an FC Holden as it was Australian assembled!

Norm, thanks for the photo.
My one looked like that but it had a stripe so it was naturally faster!

My Dad told me alot of the black cars were public service ones. They had red trim. Mostly FE, FC, FB and EK Holdens.
A few black cars were cabs but they usually were two toned with a different roof or mudguards.
