Hi,

I'm new to the forums and after some opinion on the best workshop manual to purchase to aid my rebuild of a '76 Clubman S. One of the bigger tasks I reckon I'm faced with it the grinding of the gears on downshifts which points to the synchros being knackered so I will need some detailed info about a box rebuild. I have got hold of a PDF version of Haynes Service & Repair Manual but oddly it doesn't have a section for the transmission in it.

Anybody got any suggestions of which manual(s) would be my best companion for this and many other tasks for a rebuild?

I've got that Leyland manual and many others; it's OK but has various errors, including that the wiring diagrams in it are all wrong for most Oz Minis. They are just copies of UK ones, wrong switchgear and all.

Gregorys (or Scientific Publications) #02 is best for Clubbies IMO, and their #64 best for Oz roundies. Probably out of print now but you will find one on eBay.

Forget the UK Haynes ones for Australian Minis.

It's pommy focussed too but has a good decent Oz supplement in the back, covers most things.

I certainly can't find it in myself to reccommend the Gregory's/Scientific publications ones, they get used when I need to look up a torque setting and I don't want to get the good manuals greasy

Kinda on topic, I got this workshop manual in an antique shop about a year ago. Does anybody else have one? Is it anything special? Its a ring-bound manual which seems to cover alot of stuff other manuals dont have.

Yep I've got that one, it dates from the mid-60s, when Cooper S was released. (it has supplements added for Cooper and Cooper S).
It is the basis for all the later manuals.
Yours must be later if it has the auto stuff in.

The problem with many of these books is they just copied UK stuff and have nothing about assembly of Oz windup window doors. So unless you have an 850 or 997/998 Cooper, look before you buy.
UK windup doors are nothing like ours inside...

If buying a manual for a MiniMatic though, the Leyland black book (1st post above) is best as it has the FULL automatic supplement in it. Most others have test & kickdown settings for the auto and little else for it.

The Doc's black book and Vulcan's orange book are pretty much the same "comprehensive" manual, just different publishings. There is also a dark teal blue one. They are the factory manual and are based on the earlier ring binders. If you are ordering one you need to make sure it has the Australian supplement. Some of the ring binders have the Australian supplement printed on yellow paper. There's another comprehensive manual which has a two tone cover with mnis on it, but I'm not certain that it contains the supplement.

Watch out for the 'concise' manual, its black with Yellow printing, its OK, but has large chunks missing (like the suspension).

I've been struggling with an early 3 synchro gearbox rebuild and none of the later manuals are much good, they jump around a bit between 3 and 4 synchro and aren't always very clear about which one they are talking about. I'm waiting for an early binder pre-4 synchro to arrive, I hope its easier to follow.

I agree with the Doc, it doesn't do any harm to have a couple of different manuals. I usually use the orange one, but I'll often switch to the Gregorys. Especially for their wiring diagrams, which are easier to read.

Yes, I think so. The Australian ones (at least) all have a publication number, like TP832C, although I've never bothered to study them. Yours says TP759

TP stands for Tractor Publications, the mob that printed them, but I don't know what the connection between BMC Australia and Tractor Publications was. I assume it dates back to the Nuffield tractor days.

The manual I meant to reccommend is orange like above, but it's a slightly different publication, part #AKD 4935, ISBN 1 85520 1615

Put an add in the wanted section , i'm sure someone here would have some excess manuals that they might be interested in selling

I had a look on eBay last night and saw a 2nd hand copy of the manual recommended VulcanBB18 but it ended up selling for more than the cost of a new copy so I have ordered a copy from Fishpond which should be with me in the next few days.

That's exactly the one I had, it was stolen a while ago.
