With all due respect Matt, nearly every thread on here gets sidetracked, this is discussion at its best

AMALs are great carbys - I have them on my bikes. The problem with them is the number of variables that you need to get right for them to be correctly tuned. Altering their tuning has become a bit of a dark art these days as there just aren't many specialists left.

With an SU you need to select the correct needle (not always easy in itself) and set its position. With an AMAL you have an idle circuit, a slide cutaway, a needle position, and a jet that all have to correctly selected and/or adjusted. They are also much less tolerant of wear than an SU.

The other inconvenience with them is that they need to be 'tickled' when starting from cold, which is easy on a bike but more of a hassle when you have to open the bonnet to get to them.

Having said that, they do look fantastic arrayed across the front of an A-series. If it was just a bit easier to set them up...

Tim

There's that cross flowed 8 port that lived in Sydney which is floating somewhere around in SA at the moment.
Numberplate is/was SIKART.

It has two great big holes in which the K&N air filters pop through.
TOUGH looking piece of kit!

I thought there were some photos of this Moke on here somewhere.
It was black and tough.

Don't you have rules on bullbar or other crap projections on the front of veehiggles down there in SA?
Pity the poor pedestrian that gets mowed down!

Just run the filters without the cage. Nice soft sponges to lessen the impact

if anyone mows down a pedestrian in just about any car/truck,,, what difference would a few more wobbly things like spottys & airfilters make really???

compared to a Mack truck or a Kenworth truck bullbar with spottys etc,,, or just about any 4x4 these days ,,, really?

the problems not the stuff hangin out the front,,, it`s more either the driver or the pedestrian isn`t it???

:-)

& besides i`m not such a big fan of that moke,,, just a bit over done in my Books
a bit more supple & less "STUFF" would be my call... more std looking would be classy-er i reckon

Jon Leighton, owner of now defunct Mini Bits in Melbourne ran a Arden 8 port in a Moke at Hay one year, late 70's early 80's! Power plant was straight from his sports sedan running 3 sync s/c and Salisbury. Rocket but almost uncontrolable, even for a talent like Jon.
Most 8 ports of the era produced 150 or so brake on engine dynos.

Cheers.
