Once they retract... is there a trick to get them to reel back out?

Yes.
Hold the reel horizontal, and the belt can be pulled vertically up (slowly!).

Ya stuffed now! :lol:

Sometimes you can pull it pack out enough it tightens up, then you have to hold the reel in the installed position and hope it comes back out.
Some have a spot where you can see/release the locker too.
