I have a load of 10" gravel rally tyres from Finland arriving at the Sydney dock shortly and need help with customs clearance.

Anyone in this business?

ooh yeah hopefully you dont have many as you may be really bent over hard
you will probably need to apply for a tyre importing licence and then somehow try to get the supplier/maker of the tyres to write a letter stating that they guarantee that mosquito larvae exposure hasnt occurred,
thats why we dont see cheaper tyres from suplliers of mini parts,its way too hard unfortunately
if you are really lucky they will just let it slide through

I've heard that if you arrange it to come via Perth, they'll let anything through.
This bit of information came via a regular on a knife forum.

My Uncle has a customs brokerage, never really talked with him about it so not sure what he can do for you but doesn't hurt to call!

Now your talking Moe, NZ would be brilliant in a Moke.

Theoretically you don't need a customs agent to take a car to NZ and bring it back in. You only really need them for importing stuff that is of dutiable value. They do the processing of the paperwork and collect the duty. Depending on how much work they do they often charge a massive fee to shuffle a couple of bits of paper (that you have to give them). Usually if the stuff is small enough to come in by mail or fedex the post office or fedex do the processing for a nominal fee, but if its a container that goes through a freight terminal you need an agent and it can be really expensive, on top of the duty!

I just brought two seperate shipments of "motorcycle parts" in. Each shipment with a value of $1500. Each shipment cost ~$650 just to get it through our ports. Welcome to THE MOST EXPENSIVE COUNTRY IN THE WORLD to live and do business in.

I think NZ is probably worse, their customs value limit is way lower than ours..

Yep thats about right. I freight a lot of scientific equipment around the world for work. It belongs to us so we don't pay duty on it when it comes back in, but we have to pay a Customs agent to do the clearance anyway. More often than not the Agent's fee is more than the duty we would have paid. Port and freight handling charges alone are bad enough.

According to the Overlander HUBB, NZ is pain in the rear to temporarily import a car. You have to get a roadworthy (WOF). The shipping is quite expensive too.

I'd rather IMM 2014 in the UK.

Less than $150 of that $650 was stamp duty. There were seven different "fees" just to get it in the door. Ridiculous.

I have in the past brought in 5 sets of wheels and tyres with little/no issues, with any tyres aqis always wants to investigate which is $160 ish straight up but apart from that.....

Easy!
