Hi all just a quick question and i hope someone can help. My motor is happy to sit there idling however as soon as I accelerate he coughs and splutters and almost stops on occasions, the rpms always slow down but usually go back to normal once the accelerator is not being pressed.

Does anyone have an ideas as to what it may be. It would greatly help.

Thanks :)

Have you checked for vacuum leaks? Oil level in the carburettor dashpot?

Dizzy advance??

Consider getting a timing light on to it.

I had exactly what you described. I put a tank of 98RON in and a full bottle of Wynns fuel system cleaner. This was a cheap fix for me. Now I idle at the lights and take off full tilt with no worries.

edit: your problem as described, only happened to me when I was getting up to operating temps. Once I was at operating temp the problem would go away.

Sounds like you need a new condenser.

Changed my carbi for another one today. Had to anyway as the last one didn't fit with an air filter attached. All idling ok but still have that problem of acceleration. It only happens as quoted above once it's up to running temperature it seems to go away. Might try and do the flush as suggested and see how I go.

Could it possibly be a fuel pump? I am pretty sure everything is working. But could be wrong.

Thanks for the help.

If you've changed the carb and you still have the same symptoms, then it's unlikely to be the fuel system. I'd be checking your timing, and the condition of your distributor internals...

I would also be looking at the condenser.

I should also mention, that my 'fix' for the spluttering while at the cooler temp was to run at idle with my choke completely open (so it revved quite high). I got much less spluttering when taking off at the cooler temps doing this. Now I just run with my choke completely closed.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Really appreciate!!!
This does seem to fix it. I dont run it right open however it does seem to improve it with a small amount of choke.

I do use it however it doesnt seem to need it. It will usually start without it however may take one or two goes. But with choke it will start up almost every time. Could this possibly mean it is too lean? or still look at the condensers and dizzy caps.

does it cough & splutter to the point where it`s undrivable?

as in... can you drive along the freeway ok? can you go up hills ok?

or does it just carry-on so much that you can`t actually drive the car anywhere?

because there are quite a few things which can cause what you`re describing,,, just need a bit more detail to nail it for you over the net

Could be -->

lean mixture on acceleration which could simply be not enough oil or too thin dash-pot oil

not rich enough mixture needle or not strong enough spring

Not enough ign coil reserve

condensor crook (like Tony-convertablemini suggested),,, even a loosly mounted condensor (screw not tight enough) or a distributor earth strap not hooked up inside the dizzy to the mounting of the condensor or body of dizzy will do it

or a little bit of water in your carby float bowl can cause similar symtoms

& there are many many more reasons for these sorts of symptoms,,, so let us know if the car is at least drivable & whether or not there is good power hi in the revs because this will eliminate a few things straight away... like if it revs well (once it`s up in the revs) with good power there... then i`d eliminate both condensor & coil as culprits because if it were any one of these two then it wouldn`t rev well at all & it would probably want to actually stop running if you kept your foot into the throttle

if you can baby the revs up & get it reving & it goes hard then,,, well then i`d be looking at en-richening the mixture on the acceleration section but adding oil into your dash-pot,,, adding maybe thicker oil,,, or swapping the srping out for a stronger one or simply en-richening the mixture nut a bit if it`s not too bad

if it were an intermittant problem,,, like it does it only now & then & not all the time then i`d maybe look at water in the float bowl or condensor loose or even a loose power wire on your solenoid (The one that goes to the ign switch)

ok??? more info please??? yeah???
