After travelling over 1800km in my Cooper S over the weekend my lower back was killing me at the end of the trip.

I need a recommendation of a classic style car seat (that has good lumbar support) I can fit to the S for future road trips. The standard 1969 factory ones just don't cut it for the long haul.

Any suggestions??

I find my Cobra Classics pretty good but I've only driven from Sydney as far as Kelso, and Wakefield Pk.
And yes they tilt enough to get in the back.

get a set of standard seats or just the frames, and have them re-built to suit you? i had it done for me, very comfortable.
dunno how much it would cost though, my uncle did them for me

I have low back cobras in my GT and have driven it to QLD and back twice and find them to be very comfy.

but im still young and have never had back problems

They lean back a great deal though, but you get used to it

Julie i should have let you sit in my seats during on the trip I used to find them terrible until I replaced the foam and the elastic strapping in the back and base about a month ago. When redone properly they are quite supportive. I was comfy the whole trip, and I have a bad back to start with!

You'll probably find if you slip off the covers the elastic in the backrest has completely mummified like mine below.

Replacing the foam and staps is easy to do yourself.

I've heard lots of praise for the Cobras also. I've always wondered what they are like for a long journey though.

I used to like my 1275LS seats on long trips back in the 80's when the seats were only a few years old. I know that most people say that they are rubbish seats these days.
I bet that most problems are related to the age of the foam and webbing.

The stock low backs in the Australian Cooper S and GT did get bad press when they were new though.

I do have a set of Clubman seats with headrests.

Getting them re-trimmed with the same red vinyl and bolstered to my liking is a great idea. and they would only be used for long road trips.

Luckily I have a good friend who is a trimmer as well.

I had a set of 90"s rover seats recovered and padded slightly to suit, adjustable back rest makes a huge difference.
Confortable and look right also.

sounds like a decent plan then!
i have a set of cobra seats here, ending up doing the same to them - they are not particularly well made unfortunately, redoing them from the frame up.

Julie - these look interesting. Might have a bit of trouble getting into the back seat though.

I have cobra roadster 7's which are a taller seat with bigger side support and they're awesome, comfy but very supportive and have a head rest so you don't break your neck

Swift gti seats (the older style) are pretty good, but can suffer a bit of numbness after 5+ hrs of driving. Could Be mine are 20 years old.

i use a Stratos seat,,, it has excellent side support for cornering hard , without being hard to get in & out of like some sports seats,,, it reclines just a tad, enough for me to be comfy while sitting stationary having my fruity & nutty breakfast watching the world go by at Byron main beach carpark... & yet it is wickedly comfy on long trips with it`s built-in lower-lumbar support & has a wonderful feeling "sink-in" shape too,,, also has head rest

bit hard to find the old-skool Stratos seats now-days, but i`d very much like to find a mate for mine if anyone sees a brown corduroy one like this-->

No offence intended here but--> anyone writing a book about minis 30 years ago may not have experienced such worn or stuffed-with components as we are finding these days.

You should put your heart & soul into everything you do.

My vote is for the cobra classics, extremely comfortable. I had exact same problem with the old mini seats, used to give me such a bad back after a few minutes of driving let alone hours.

Beware though, they are for small bummed people. If I recall correctly, you should be fine Julie!
