Guys,

now that I have my mini running I need to get it sorted well enough to get it registered. It hasn't been running for probably the better part of 2 decades so I am not surprised that it makes some smoke. It is running rich from what I can tell and pretty rough, not really surprised though as i have to learn how to tune an SU (last mini had a webber).

Guess the question is, how long till it runs cleaner (assuming it needs to burn off excess crap and blow away the cobwebs etc)? Since I can't drive it (legally......) I don't have the option of taking it for a good hard run. What other options are achievable? I really don't want to pull the engine down if I don't have to until AFTER I get it registered cause I know if I do it will be another 12 months added to the time I get to drive it :? :(

Any suggestions?

cheers,

CJ

Jack it up & put SAFELY! on stands, put in 3rd gear, and drive it @ 50-60kmh with the brake applied a bit for 5 mins or so. That will load it up and the smoke might clear. Don't do it too long or the pads/shoes will fade awayyyyyyyyy..

Wouldn't this be the same as going for a drive up a long hill?

correct not registered and a distinct lack of long hills nearby

not fussed about going through a set of brake pads, as it has Honda discs on it which are about to be changed back to original mini discs
