Hi everyone,

I've tried searching the forum with hopeless results...

Was just wondering if there is any aerosol options like the white knight alpine green for Cooper motors for the earlier dark greens?

I can colour match and drag the motor to work and 2 pack it but couldn't be assed if a suitable aerosol will do the trick...I'm not building a show car.

Brand recommendations etc would be most welcome.

Depends if the motor is an early 850 (8AM/U/H)or a later Aussie 850 (8Y/U/H) . The early ones are dark green and the later ones same colour as Cooper S

Early 8amuh series, I was more curious if there is a reasonable aerosol option available to resemble the original dark green.

POR 15 do an engine painting kit which is quite good , I have been told that the Austin Healey Green is a very good match , although it looks a bit dark on the colour chart . I am going to try it when I repaint the Cooper motor

Edit : The Aussie catalogue lists a BMC Green Engine Paint (page18)

You don't need anything special to paint an engine. I'm told Land Rover bronze green is the original dark (non metallic) BMC engine colour.

Because of the cast finish pretty much any paint can be brushed on. Make sure the block is clean - mine was hot tanked - a coat of etch primer and then brush on the top coat. I used automotive acrylic. It will last 20 years.

Cheers, Ian

The correct colour for the early British ones is apparently British Standard middle bronze green (BS 223). Lots of sources say that Land Rover M10 Bronze Green is a good match (based on Parnell, I think), but I think its a typo. I reckon he meant MID bronze green, I can't find anything that says M10 bronze green is a real landy colour.

Must admit I failed the pedant exam. I just go the the paint shop, check the colour charts and buy what seems OK.

I do have (the remnants of) a (30yo) can of S (metallic green) engine paint mixed from the BMC formula/tints. However, I would suggest BMC allowed a wide degree of tolerances when they mixed individual batches....

Cheers, Ian

Tim - I just checked my BASLAC (a part of the RM/BASF paint family) paint formula mix and there is BS223 MIDDLE BRONZE GREEN that can made up in 2 PAC topcoat. I will be painting the '67 Monte engine this colour so will put up some pics when painted.

Im an automotive spray painter, the shop I'm in has never thrown a paint formula book out in the 45 years of operation. I've been through the old formula books and found plenty of codes. I also have access to a colour spectrophotometer so I think I will take a piece of clean original colored part and match some 2k.

I was looking for a lazy mans option in an aerosol but should pull my finger out and just transport the power unit to work and spray it in a booth.

Will happily report back on a colour match if anyone is interested.

The Dulux code for Middle Bronze Green (BS-223) is 03030.
I'm sure that a good auto paint place could stick it in an aerosol.

Ive just checked my iPhone app with my colour retrieval for the system I use at work. I have a 2k formula for BS223 middle bronze green. When I get back to work I will mix some up and do a spray out and see how it matches an original piece. I can also generate a 2k solid formula from scratch using a spectrophotometer and see how well that matches the original application.
