How the fark do you get this nut undone

Lots of swearing and cussing. I take it you have locked the box in 2nd and 4th(or is it one and three??).

Wait until you have to retighten it

Minimania videos show to lock 1st & Reverse....well on the build up anyway.

I use a 1/2" drive breaker bar a short extension and a 3 foot long piece of round tube for extra leverage......and the last gearbox i had to jump on it to crack the nut! Only because I couldn't hold the box by myself at the same time as hanging off the extension tube!

All garage work involves equal measures of enthusiasm, ingenuity and a fair degree of irresponsibility.

Lock it in 1st and 4th if it's a 4 synchro, and 2nd & 4th if it's 3 synchro (according to BL manual).

Then, you have to hold the case from moving.
A few ways:
put a plank on it and drive a car up
bolt to a bench
bolt to a 3M long bit of pressed channel (my present method)
put under back of boat trailer and wind the jockey wheel right up (I used to until TK bought my boat).

Undoing nut:
deep 1-1/2" socket and breaker bar + 6' of scaffold pipe, or
rattle gun (not good for gear teeth)

If all else fails because some dill has Loctited it, cut 1 corner of the nut off with a 4" angle grinder then crack the nut.

They are supposed to be 150 lb/ft, but some fitted by a gorilla are far tighter.

in over 45 years we have always got them off,,, & just-in-case we have a "one inch drive electric rattle-gun" which we have used on some stubborn austin 1800 pinion nuts in the past

No offence intended here but--> anyone writing a book about minis 30 years ago may not have experienced such worn or stuffed-with components as we are finding these days.

You should put your heart & soul into everything you do.

I am not trying to be a smart a**e but Looking at the gearbox in the photo it does not appear that You have locked it in two gears at that point,
Also looking at the amount of ferrous and ferric oxide present I would think You are going to have a few more Problems pulling this one down

No I haven't locked it in gear, that's why it's eating a rag Do I need to remove the selector forks to get it in two gears at once or what?

In your photo, just to the left of the pinion nut you can see the selector shafts. You still have the piece which prevents 2 shafts from being moved at once in place.

Perhaps follow a workshop manual closer, as it will save you at a lot of time. Also your collection of tools look like toys next to the pinion nut

Go buy a nice big breaker bar, and if that isn't enough then slide a pipe over it for extra length.

I'd love to see your tool box if you call a 3/4" drive ratchet a toy

The one I did recently was barely finger tight. Needless to say the pinion is knackered.

Also had issues with mine a couple years back.
Did similar as DrMini, but used a drill.

Simply "centre-punched" a starting spot on the big nut (side), about 6mm clear of the shaft thread. Then drilled (parallel to the shaft thread) with a 3mm drill bit. Slowly increased the drill bits until it got close (but not touched) to the shaft thread. This weakened the nut enough to smack it with a cold-chissel, thus spreading it enough to loosen.

DrMini's way might be better if you have a steady hand.

hehe yea a 3/4" ratchet isn't a toy, but it's not the right tool for the job. I don't like putting that much stress on a ratchet, even if it is 3/4". It's still shorter then a decent breaker bar as well. Plus that rattle gun IS a toy


Good work sorting it out though, have fun with the rest of it all. (Maybe i'm weird, but i like doing gearboxes)
