Either I have a cracked head or the head gasket has gone. Either way, there is water on top of the cylinder but not in the oil.

So I have made the decision to rebuild the engine. this is the first time I've had anything like this done.

I am chasing suggestions for what parts to use, suggestions on what to do with the head, block, bores, cylinders, rings, gaskets, valves, rockers etc etc. I am open to doing some extra work on the engine. Will be replacing the radiator also.

At the moment He is used as a 2nd car, driven on most weekends and occasionally during the week.

I have thought about doing a brake upgrade to discs as well and using it on the track in something like the slow group that Paul Ruzic runs in his TimeAttack days.

any suggestions, ideas on which direction to head in will be welcome.

Has the engine been rebuilt before?
Do you know its history at all.

If you are going overbore and you have a cracked head it might be worth looking for a 1275 to start with, as machining costs will be the same either way. You may as well start with a new bigger engine.

On the other hand if there's still some life left in the bores then new rings and bearings might see it on its way.

Either way, tear it down and measure measure measure and do some more measuring, If everything is in spec then throw it back together.
Otherwise start looking at your options.

If you are looking at competition you may want to consider upgrading to ARP bolts, wedging the crank, lightening the flywheel and maybe even machine down the dished pistons a touch.
And thats just a start.

How much can you do your self and what kind of engine do you want?
