I bought a KPH Chinese Smiths speedo from Minispares. Works perfectly for me.

Mine (200KMH) is fine too, reads correct according to the TomTom GPS, it's only done 15,000km though.
I've had it a while, not sure if it's Chinese, how would you tell...? No `made in PRC' stickers anywhere...

Its a dirty secret these days that unless it states otherwise, one can assume they're made in China, or at least assembled locally from parts made in China.

Not that its a bad thing, remember that all that technology in your iPhone, and the 20 layer PCBs they may contain are all made in China....When they plan to make nice stuff, they really can make some nice stuff actually..

Your laptop, your TV, you iphone, your Samsung, your robotic vacuum, probably a lot of parts in your Japanese car, DEFINITELY a lot of parts in your mini...I wasn't around, but we used to diss the Japanese for the same thing while they quietly set about leaving us in the dust.

We're a sad reflection of where we should be I believe..

Re the GPS guages, I have to ask an obvious question but what happens if there is no GPS signal, (tunnel, forest, poor weather) is there a backup system? Same with the odometer?

They are very nice looking guages though.

G'day

I am using a TomTom as a speedo at present so when I loose signal, which is not very often, I use the tacko. On my car it is quite simple as it dose 30kph in 3rd and 40kph in 4th per 1000 so 2000 is either 80 or 60.

Cheers
Graham

The speedo on my old car used to buzz and jump around a lot - say between 90 and 105 when doing 100ish.

I got sick of that so I pulled off the cable from the back of the speedo and squirted oil down the cable.

Seemed to do the trick after a few days

Note that new cables are often dry as a bone inside, even rusty.
Should lube the inner cable with grease, but leave the top 100-150mm dry or it'll get into the speedo head. They don't like it...

Does anyone know if the angle drive used on MGB speedo heads has the same thread as the smiths speedo minis, and if it has been used successfully to prevent interference with carbys/air filter assemblies?

(I believe not all MGBs had and angle drive on the gearbox, and not all had one at the speedo head, but BGA4794 refers to the one I think is most likely to work)
Here's a link:

Thanks.
Matt

Yes I have a right angle drive from an MG. It is not car specific but guage specific. If it says it works on all Smiths guages (pretty easy to do as they pretty much all have a square drive mechanism) then it should work on mini Smiths Speedos.

I remember I had to pay about $80pp each for both of mine (one carked it) and both were second hand so yeah they aren't cheap.

If you are not concerned about originality:

1. Buy this:

http://www.digital-speedos.co.uk/classic-british-mini-speedometer-drive-adapter-158-p.asp

2. Fit electronic speedo of your choice.

3. Calibrate and go.

I use a GPS in Audrey the Austin. But I don't need to in my Moke. The VDO electrnoic speedo is accurate. Plus it's not reliant on a connection to a satellite.

Cheers,

Thanks Lillee, I've ordered one, fingers crossed.
I'll try to remember to post here once I know if it fits so others can know.
Cheers
Matt

Got one from Rimmer Brothers in UK. $61.10 landed.
Happy chappy.
