I was prepping my tank for repair when I noticed this inside..

Are these necessary ? Or can I leave it out ?

It's to stop rocks getting in your tank. You can leave it out.

I removed mine because it sometimes fell in the bottom of the tank and rattled around. Also it makes it easier to fill the tank to the brim with it removed.

The early tanks had them, they fit just inside the neck. There's supposed to be a bit of mesh covering the bottom of them. I think they act as a strainer and reduce the amount of slop when the fuel sloshes around.

Tank strainers that haven't rusted out are rare.
Have it replated and keep it safe.

Ok so I'll leave it out, but keep it.

Unfortunately the mesh in mine had a tear, so I removed, ill make sure to cover it with tank sealer with the rest of my tank

The neck and strainer is a WW2 jeep idea and so the Moke once again proves it's military infuence.
