Lobby your local Gov. & council - change is long overdue.
It's rediculous that there's less tax on a 2 Tonne oil burning 4WD than a hybrid Insight.

Ummmm.
The current rego system is baised on weight look at the "Motor Vehicle Tax" on the rego papers. So a 2 tonne 4wd pays more for rego than my Morris 1100.

So lets compare my 1966 Morris 1100 to a 1976 FordF100

Morris
Rego Fee $47 + Motor Vehicle Tax $150 = $197

F100
Rego fee $47 + Motor VehicleTax $282 = $329

So the larger vehicle is already taxed higher.

Now should fuel economy be taxed? It already is!
NSW collects 3c per litre (the feds collect it for NSW) on all petrol sold in NSW. The Federal Government collects even more!
The Morris gets 40 miles per gallon.
The F100 gets 18 miles per gallon.
So the F100 pays more than twice the tax for going the same distance.

meh  just the old european rego scheme. most euro countries based theri tax regime on engine capacity at some point. that is why there were so many 1 litre engined cars getting around.

didn't the italians find that the only way to reduce fuel consumption significantly in cities was to tax the fuel til it cost equivalent of $5 a litre back in the 80s?

it won't make a lick of difference to emissions if brought in the way they are saying

as long as victoria decide to take up on it too would be great. We should get a petition happening and lobby canberra to push not just each state to look after there own! Can the Site handle that??

Should have been clearer. I was talking about the taxes on purchasing new vehicles. Import duty.
In a loophole put in to appease the farmers & National Party, Range Rover HSEs are still in the same classification as a Hilux ute and have less import duty than an equivalently priced passenger vehicle or low emissions hybrid. Now every mum wants a Toorak Taxi.
I'm not blameless either - had a Jackaroo for a few years before coming to my senses.

You know that for the extra cost of servicing, fuel & tyres for a big 4WD over a "normal" car, I can hire a 4WD for two weekends a year & pay for the weekend!
Then I can drive it like a hire car & give it back on Monday

Canberra got rid of Super petrol for the Greenies even thogh some Pacific nations have higher lead levels than those in capital cities in Australia.

I reckon Canberra should make conversion to unleaded GST free! Get real Howard.
