I am having a play with the wiring in the mini. Below is the key/ignition that was in the box of bits I got with the car.
Is this some where near original? If so how does it operate?
If the key is in the central position you can take the key in and out but you can turn the key left and turn it right.
I am used to the traditional ignition off, acc, on and Start.
Also it has a push button on start on the solenoid, I am guess I can still use the key inside the car by attaching a wire wire to the solenoid but how,it I connect tot he free spade on the battery side that does complete the circuit. So where or am I better to just convert to a normal starter solenoid?

The starter solenoid is a usual mini type you will find on earlier roundnoses. The ignition switch is something else however. I wonder if it is a tractor ignition with a glow to the left and start to the right?

Better off finding a normal mini ignition switch imho. This one might give you more trouble than good.

If you can ask a real question that we can all understand we might try and help you a bit better.

Sorry typing on my phone and I didn't reread it.

So my question was what is to stop people from just popping your bonnet pushing the start button and stealing it? Or am I better to put a immobiliser/alarm on it?

I'll try ease up on the crack bill....

Pushing that button just turns over the motor with the starter. The ignition is not on. The solenoid with the button is just a handy feature if you wanted to start or turn over the motor from the engine bay. The ign would have to be on from inside the car for it to actually start/fire up.

You can't beat a good deterant, either large rotty in back seat or good imobiliser connected to really loud siren. I'd rather get booked for noise pollution than loose the car.
