Hello all,

Was reading this tutorial on gearbox rebuilding by a guy who seems to have a big name as a UK mini gearbox specialist (Guessworks):

Seems he recommends pre-soaking gaskets in oil to help with sealing:

"What I do now is disassemble the diff casing, and oil soak all the gaskets and rebuild. This helps with the seal of the gearbox."

I've always done clean and dry, with flavour of the week gasket sealant.

Has anyone an opinion on the pre-soak method?

Hoping it's just just the thing, if the expert says so!

Oil soaking was popular in the olden days....but with modern goops its is probably unecessary...and doubtful anyway...

I can also remember lightly wetting cork gaskets with water to make them less stiff and more pliable/formable when fitting/seating.

They used to do that back when 850's were new, bit different now. I use 3 bond gasket cement, works absolutly brilliant. Originally for motorbikes I think, but this stuff is so good you could bolt motor together without gaskets and it would seal.

which one? 1102, 1104?

I use Loctite 515, it's a metal to metal flange sealant.
I have built a couple of boxes (mine) with no diff side cover gaskets, no problem.

I take it that you too don't subscribe to the soak-your-gaskets method Doc?

Soaking gaskets went out with plain cork ones... :lol:

Interesting that the Guessworks gearbox guy recommends it.
But I'm with you and the other contributors.
Its sealant for me. And as I've got a big tube of 515.....

I use loctite 515/518 (cant remember which but theyll be pretty similar) on my land rover. Not lost any oil and thats with river crossings, mud, and sudden temperature changes.

Pretty much all ill be using when i do my minis engines.

I heard a tip somewhere, put the sealant and the bolts in finger tight, let the gasket cure then tourque them down.
