Hi all,,

this one has me stumped again (seems to be happening a lot lately)...went to install the distributor drive and was setting TDC on firing stroke on no 1 piston...found TDC with the piston and checked on the flywheel and the 1/4 mark is nowhere to be seen... rotated the engine until I lined it up and the piston is well and truly on its firing stroke. How can this be?!?!?!?! Thanks

If it's a 2 piece flywheel, the outer part can bolt onto the hub in 6 positions. Only 1 is correct.
Obviously someone has had it apart.

I don't use those marks they are a PITA. I weld a pointer to the timing cover (or use a later cover), then file a TDC mark on the pulley.

Sure, if it's out of the car...
When you retighten the 6 nuts (to ~38 ft/lb) centre pop them again in 3 spots so they can't come loose.

Nope it shouldn't really change balance, as the hub is steel and machined true all over. Unlike the outer bit which is grey cast iron- that varies in density.

Location: Sydney - strangely, I am glad of the sight of hills!!
i would just buy a new steel flywheel from the UK (i did!) far easier and no (little) chance of it being out of balance.
