Although my respray is a long way off yet, I have always wondered: Does anyone remove the seam covers and spray the seams then refit or add new ones? or are they just sprayed over?

The respray I am planning will be everything from the shell removed bar the wiring loom and Brake/Hydro lines. I'm not looking at a bare metal job, just a rub back and respray. the interior will only be sprayed on the parts that are exposed when car is complete, as I plan to keep the original colour and the factory BMC paint is in top shape inside under the carpet.

There is no rust in the car except some surface on the front sub-frame where the brake fluid leaked/spilt. and shes never been in an accident and only resprayed once and it was in my possession at the time, but it was only a cheap job. ($1100 13 years ago)

Just finishing spraying mine in polyurethane 2 pack (Du Pont Imron)

I did it with seam covers in situ, but removed them beforehand to check 4 rust.

Replaced them after treating the seams with rust converter (Killrust) to contain the surface rust (were'nt too bad surprisingly).

Seems to me this is the only logical way. The joints should be sealed with sikaflex etc before painting anyway.

I'm about to do mine and want to know what people are using to seal up the seams? I got sika etc but what is the correct product?

I used white Sikaflex 291 inside mine, with just 2 clips. They hold on fine.
The painter decided to paint them off the car, then I fitted them. Probably would be neater to fit them first though, then paint the lot.

Me too.

Just painted my wifes Cooper. Complete strip, then wire brush on a drill, I buffed the seams and primed. I then masked the seams about 1/4 " clear of the seams. Smeared a coat of Sikaflex down the spotted join, so I knew it was "sealed". Then filled the seal mouldings with Sikaflex and clamped them on. Pulled off the masking tape, then when it was dry, I picked / rolled the excess off.
