original colour is black - very rare, some people say they never existed, but that's not true, just not many of them

Are you able to post a picture of the ID plate? As already said, Black Minis are rare, therefore so is the plate.

8AMUH suggests to me that the gearbox originaly fitted to this would have been A brass
cone synchro type, and if still fitted I woudl guess that it is the one with the smaller
double row bearing 22A104 or 22A363 cast into the front of The case

Any engines with 'Y' in the number are Oz sourced/based items - thus your 8Y is an Aussie 850.

All the others are pommy ones, so in this case with 8AM, it had an imported engine.

Same goes for the early coopers with 9F engines, autos, etc.

Oh and on topic.. a black 850! nice find :)

cheers,

Jacob

`Y' in the start of the prefix is Australian built, eg 9Y, 12YD, 12YE, etc.

`Y' in regard to an S motor eg. 9F/SA/Y or 9F/XE/Y does not mean this. They were all imported. I think it meant C/R is 9.75:1, but without trawling Parnell etc's books again I'm not totally sure.

My wife has a factory black 850, but I guess that doesn't count as it's an imported UK spec Austin. :)

9F/SA/Y or 9F/XE/Y - yes the Y refers to the compression ratio...

Y for1275s, X for 970s and H for 1071s.... and 997s - which is why you can't identify a 1071 (unless you have the "batch" numbers.. 8)

Cheers, Ian
