Can anyone please tell me what the options are for fitting flares with no holes in the bodywork (except the lip I guess)? Getting a bit confused as I've figured out that when some say "no holes" they just mean no visible screw heads, they still need holes in the bodywork.

Just the Cooper S ones with the backing strips? Or are there others?

Thanks

The original flares like S ones, mount onto the backing strip which is spotwelded to the lip on the car. No holes - the flares are retained by the chrome strip.

Flares where the fasteners go into the lip only include monte carlos, avonbars (hard to get), and the two junior mentioned.

Flares where the fasteners are in the body, but not visable when installed are things like sportspacks, innocentis with the stainless cover, and most bodykits.

The original "S" flares did have clips that were set into holes in the mudguards, & the flare fitted down onto them & actually locked into them,,, & then the clip onto the re-enforcer as well,,, however, most people just discarded the round black "lock-in" clips

I thought thats how they did it because the flares I had had slots on the back for that very reason. They also had double sided tape on that edge too, so I figured thats how most people hold them on now.
:D

I've never seen (though I've not looked at that many in detail) a factory fitted set (MK2 S) with the black clips fitted, only cars that had them aftermarket

Thanks for that.

Soooo.....would I be right thinking that the Wood & Pickets style are going to mean less phaffing about to fit than the ones with backing plates?

The other benefit would be fewer old codgers thinking I was trying to copy an S.....

I wouldn't say there's no effort involved in fitting them, they're a bit tricky to get nice but once they're on they look awesome (mine are Monte Carlo ones but had wood and pickets too)

good point ;)

I do think the side trim on S type flares looks nicer though
