I have had two wishes recently. One is to get myself fit, and the other is to get my gearbox rebuilt. Indirectly both may be granted - just not the way I want

Last night driving home, the beast started making awful noises and acting really strangely. In gear it would suddenly gain revs, and then nearly stop dead. If I try and start the car in neutral it wont do anything. It will start with the clutch in, but I can't get gears. Something in the clutch has definitely collapsed as I only adjusted it on Tuesday and now there's about half inch to an inch free play. I was only around the corner from home and just had to limp it up one hill. I'm hoping it's nothing too major internal in the greabox, as it rolls no problems.

When the car was put together (by previous owner), he did a fair bit of engine work, but only ever put a 2nd hand gearbox in. It has always crunched 2nd unless I double clutch or change down at a very low speed so the gearbox has always been on my "to do" list, I just wanted to choose when to do it - time and money is at a premium at the moment.

I am going to bite the bullet and just rip the engine out and strip the box. I don't want anymore band-aids on this car so I'm going to do it properly. I have my mate who will help me checking the gearbox out and re-building it. I have also had my eye on a Limited Slip Diff. I don't have the money to buy it right now, but I don't wanna do the gearbox twice so I may just beg borrow and steal to get it. Is there any other mods (within a reasonably tight budget) to do to it while it's out??

Talk about the ups and downs of Mini ownership!! Looks like I may have to get fit - Riding my bike and walking while the beast's off the road

I'd put a centre oil pickup in it, definitely.
And if you can't afford the new diff, at least fit a comp diff pin, new planet gears and thrust washers.

I REALLY REALLY want the Limo - and I already have a centre oil pickup (at least I'm pretty sure I do).

Any other suggestions??

Catch 22 - The Doc would no doubt recommend changing the 1st motion and laygear to equate to Mk2 S ratios if they haven't already been done, but you'll have to pull the gearbox to find out (by counting the teeth on the first motion (18T) or looking at the code on the laygear (22G1040). By the time you find out, and order the parts (from minispares), then wait 1 month to get them from the UK even when you pay for a courier ($100), then pay customs and duty - you'll wish you hadn't bothered.

Other than that, perhaps a magnetic trap?

NO WAY will I use that magnetic trap mounted in the back of the box..
I've got a new one here. I tried it for 3 days. They load up with fine stuff, then restrict the oil flow and starve the pump. And it's in a bastard of a place to get to with LCB and Hardy Spicers..

Glad it's out. 8)
If you want magnets, bung 'em on the filter case.

I don't mind waiting until the box is out to look at what parts I need - but will definitely need to source them locally. I will need them in a hurry - What is best? Karcraft??

I have heard some people say bad things about some of the new gears you can buy these days - poor quality/tolerances etc.

What does the doctor order?? :)

MiniSpares (UK) gears, & MG Heritage (Oz made) layshafts.. 8)
Karcraft supply most of the rest.

But what if I can't wait for parts from UK ? (or afford air cargo - is it expensive?)
Are there any other viable options (without wanting to be dodgy) ?? :?

I'll hopefully be ripping the engine out on Sunday or Monday night, and I have next wednesday off, so I can hopefully get some help with it then. If it's something simple I hope to have it back on the road soon after. I'd like a couple of weeks of tame street driving to prove it all works before attempting some more motorsport!!! (ie Hay Practice Motorkhana on the 29th!)
