 Post subject: Rocker Oil Feed

I'm assembling a standard set of pressed rockers onto a Minispares HD rocker shaft. No reason for the HD shaft in particular...I just had one lying around...

The oil feed on my 295 head is from the 1st rocker post, but the machined relief for the shaft retainer screw on the rocker shaft is at the 2nd post position. The first post position has a hole in the same position, but it is the same size as the normal oil feed holes.

Is it usual to countersink this hole to a larger size to allow the retainer to bed in properly to the shaft?

Early motors had the locating screw in the 1st post. Later cars all had it in the 2nd.
Some aftermarket cheap shafts have 2 csks so they fit either. However the recommended method for using a later shaft is to drill an oil hole thru the base of your #2 post then swap 1 & 2 around. Putting the screw in #2 position.

Thanks Doc, that's not difficult to do. Any reason for the preference to drill the stand and not countersink the shaft?

You may find the new HD shaft is hardened. If not, sure- just csk it.

I find it's easier to just stick a 1/8" drill into the bottom of the other post.
Note on late rockers, all the posts have an oil hole in.

Yeah, it was simpler to drill the post.
I didn't even try the countersinking on the shaft. Too much to worry about leaving swarf inside the shaft.

All done now, the rockers have replaced the MS 1.5:1 rockers I had on the 998 until I built a standard set up. It only took 26 months to get around to it...
