I've never used a tool - if I were doing it a lot I would also buy one. But it's not hard if you know how. If you put a little oil on the spring and ball, they will stick in the hole, but they won't sit in far enough to push it on. I just put all the springs and balls on, and sit the inner hub on top of the outer. Put a bit of weight on, and get a pen and push each ball in. I've done it a few times without any trouble. And do it in a clear plastic bag to be sure.

Dave's tool gets a workout at my place....Does that sound wrong?

Bloody brilliant. Dave does 2 versions the plastic and the alloy. I have tried both and I think the plastic one is a little smoother to use, but both are excellent. Must have if you ever consider you might do a gearbox at some time in your life.

For a few bucks why would you bother making up your own one. Dont be a tight arse just buy the right kit.

I like Docs tool - it's old, a bit rough around the edges but it does the job
