I am doing a rod change box for a mate, and pulling it apart I found this. Looks like the main shaft has been machined down and a new bit machined up.

It's a neat fit, but does turn and looks like it's been fretting a bit, and not as hard as the original shaft.

It measures 13.88mm (meant to be 14mm, right?)





is this normal practice if a shaft is damaged?

should I be concerned?

yeah 18mm is the A+ size

so it could be to mix-n-match or maybe just to repair a worn out set

either way i don`t like it spinning & if it`s not "HARD" then it`s rubbish

sorry, OD is 13.8mm, ID is something like 10.5mm, it's a normal A series input shaft

There is a stamping on the casing from a mini specialist I trust, so I think it might be one of the 'good' ones - will stick with it

I measured a standard shaft and it is the same size

I reckon i can see a lip on the sleeve in the first pic. But that is just from where i'm sitting.

Someone has sleeved it as I do for repair, but they have NOT used a bearing inner ring. These are hardened RC62 or better for running rollers on. The ones I use are p/no IRT 1020-2.
These rings are 14mm OD and 10mm ID x 20mm long. They are a bit long but I grind the end back flush, once fitted.

Give them .0005" (1/2 a thou) interference fit. I warm them a little with the hot air gun, then push them on with the tailstock. A drop of oil on the shaft helps.

The fact that i can see a lip and drmini says it's 14mm, not 13.8 tells me it's stuffed

So i guess the shaft you checked the measurement against is stuffed as well

This is of course presuming you are adhering to correct measuring practices

it might have been 13.9, but yeah... there's some wear there

I didn't want to strip the mainshaft! the synchros are all good, it was just a clean out and replace the big bearings
