I just went to adjust my boot hinges as I noticed one side was sitting a bit low. Turns out it was low because the thread on one of the studs was stripped. Then when I went to tighten the other stud in that side, it stripped aswell. I pulled the hinge off to see if there was enough thread left to tap it, but no luck.

This seems to happen any time I go to adjust any hinges on the car. It seems they're just made from super soft crappy aluminium cans or something.

What do you all recommend? Can you get bigger studs to go in so I can just tap a new thread in the hinge? Or do I need to find some decent 2nd hand hinges that will be a bit better made and then get them painted the right colour?

I kind of need the car by Monday. I can't see that happening now that the boot is half hanging off it and I've already got a mega busy weekend.

Any suggestions welcome.

Yeah, just tap it to the next size. I was stuck one day like you and couldn't find a stud. I just used a long bolt and cut the head off it :)

I tapped it to 5/16 UNC (a COARSE thread, less likely to strip out). Then machined some 5/16 UNC bolts down to 1/4", and made `bull headed' studs. Loctited them in.
So the bit sticking out of the hinge is still 1/4 UNF, and the short bit at the end is 5/16 UNC.
