hey guys, just looking to get a rough idea on what running gear is going for/worth or what I should expect to pay for the following.

1. 1275cc complete motor and gearbox needing a rebuild.
2. 1100cc complete motor and gearbox needing a rebuild.
3. 998cc complete motor and gearbox needing a rebuild.

300-600 for the 1100
600-1000 for the 1275.

Price would depend on what it needs, when it was last used, if it has any mods already and what ancilliaries are attached.

Everyone wants one, that's the problem. There aren't many to go around but if you look carefully enough you can find a whole and complete 1275 for the right money. Give the local mini places a call, ask Mad Matt what he has, I am sure he's stockpiled more than his fair share. He's up your way.

If building from scratch, don't be tempted to buy pieces of an engine (like block, crank, rods etc) as you'll be chasing all the ancillaries till the cows come home, which usually will end up costing you more in the long run. Things like oil filter bracket, clutch cover housing, primary gear, idler gear, thrust washers etc etc etc, in the end it all adds up to a very big bill (think $5000 if you had to buy new everything...)

Best to buy a complete engine and replace only what you need to. $800 to $1000 is probably the right price for a "good" 1275...

On top of that, a rebuild will end up costing you $1000 to $2000 (excluding labour) so factor that in.

If you want HP too then triple that! or more!

On that Gumtree Cooper S engine. Does he have rocks in his head
$7000 for an "apparently" new engine with only 7000 kms on it! Judging by the paint on the engine it looks as though it hasn't been touched for decades. It's clearly had a lick of paint at some stage but who knows when. Also no carbs etc.

I'd stick with the more reliable Mk 2 S head apparently on the motor. I was lucky that my Mk 1 S head could be repaired. I've also been extremely lucky to have recently found a NOS Mk 2 S head but didn't pay anywhere close to $3000!
I honestly hope that someone wouldn't buy an engine for this price off the internet.

"Mk2 S head" - common misconception. Any 12G940 can be made into a MK2 S head, in some cases better than. So don't hold them in too high a regard... Unless of course you have a concourse Mk2 "S" to match...

Even then can you tell the difference between two identical 12G940 heads? both with same valve sizes, 11 studs and painted same colour?

Take a very close look at the crank nose! Fretted beyond repair in my opinion and the engine would probably be junk. Try finding a replacement crank! The guy has had too much whoopee weed IMHO.

Yes meant to add the 12G940 is any 1275 head but needs 12G1805 stamp to be a genuine S head but then again not all mk 2 S heads were stamped with the extra 12G1805.
I think this guy needs to be reported to Gumtree if that would stop some poor unsuspecting sod buying this likely heap of junk

Quite right John, it's a 12G940 to look at, and he even says so in the ad.
Definitely not a Mk1's AEG163 or the earlier one (I forget the number of).
