Giot it !! Phew, one stressful week. The owners said the rent hadn't been paid for months and the staff had not been paid either, so no wonder things went AWOL. Some customers had complete cars locked in there. The business (founded by the owners father in 1946) may live again but it will take a while to sort out all the present legal mess.

So thanks to everyone and this tremondous forum for all your help.

Yes it was, and I think I ended up paying a bit less for it $-wise although I paid a lot more in grief !

Lesson learnt: in these tough economic times do a health check on any local business that you are about to entrust to do work on rare and valuable automotive components because there's no guarantee the business will still be trading when you return to collect them!
