Ok so I have always wondered about the history of the motor in my car.

I have the head off today and measured the bores. It is 72.0mm or thereabouts and standard stroke which I think equates to about 1324cc. It also has dished pistons so could be more.

No wonder it goes pretty well.

Ok so the cylinders look fine except for number 3 which obviously had the water going in it. The gasket was an aluminium based one and prettty Carp by the look of it.

Looking at the head it is a 12G1316 with what looks to be standard pprts.

The chambers look ok so I'll finish de-coking them and then think about opening up the ports touch

Any ideas about cleaning the inside of the head while it is off? Is s soak in CLR ok for this job?
Ill also have to give the block a good flush.

Anyway any comments welcome.
The carby is still great (just needs a tune by Matt)

Those exhaust seats look pretty eroded, I'd be at least refacing them, or else fit unleaded inserts. They are too bad to just lap in.
Check all the valve stems and guides, if worn buy new ones. They are cheap as chips.

Does the engine number end with an S on this block??? Looks like a sleeved Block and valve guides have Liners! I could be wrong.

Those exhaust seats look pretty far gone and they also look like they might be too far down for a grind/cut

I dont recall there being an s after the numbers but Ill check..

It is weird in that the engine prefix is 12H897UH and then six numbers as opposed to 12H902.

I did notice the sleeves but not on the guides so well spotted Tony.

All the valves seem to be in good nick and dont seem to have any play on the guides. I'll measure the valves stems and if they are ok get new guides put in with the hard seats.

I'll be interested to see what the local place charges for putting the inserts and guides in. What do you guys normally pay for inserts?

Also on getting the inside of the head clean do any of you guys have a trick I can do at home or can the head shop do it?

Also whats the best way of getting the crud off the top of the pistons without damaging them?

Down here it costs about $160 to get 4 unleaded exhaust inserts fitted and then all 8 seats recut.
Those guides look to have K-liners in them already, if the valve stems are fine they should still be OK. They are better than stock guides as you can run less clearance without the valves seizing up.

Stems are fine and the chambers and ports cleaned up nicely.Now that I have all the gunk off, the inlet seats are all good but the exhaust ones are eroded. I lapped the first one to see what they were like and it did come up a bit but they'll be off to the shop this week for inserts.

As the seats for inlet and exhaust lookto be recessed a little, would you normally look to get inlet and exhaust done or just exhaust? Like I said the inlets look pretty good. The spots you can see in the pic above are grime and cast off from when I had started to de-coke the head.

Fit exhaust inserts only.
If you want to improve breathing and restore the height of the inlet seats easily, fit Mk2S inlet valves (35.6mm) and have the seats recut/profiled to suit the bigger valves.

Ok so rang a local and the quote was $65 each for the inserts and then $14 to $25 each to get the inlet seats cut as well. That would be a max of $360 so a bit expensive compared to $160.

Might make a few more phone calls.

They have a good name locally and he said they had done mini work before and mentioned the valve sizes off the top of his head so I'd be happy to go there aside from the price.

I suppose its only money but probably better spent on the family..

I think $50 per insert is perfectly reasonable so his prices would only be a bit above average. It's up to you to decide whether he is above average to justify it.

Not saying don't look for a better price, just saying it isn't unreasonable

Ok found another local shop who have quoted $300 for a full strip, clean, inserts, seat cut etc etc and reassemble.
