Hello all, I've put it off long enough but the time has come to rebuild the dissy on my 850 - the last service picked up that it was very worn and as a result the timing is scattered.

I'm just wondering what other 850 owners thoughts are on which way to go - at this stage I'm thinking of one of the following:
- Rebuild existing dissy and keep points ignition
- Rebuild existing dissy and fit a petronix or lumention electronic ignition kit
- Fit a complete new CSI electronic dissy, like this: https://www.minispares.com/product/Clas ... o%20search

Has anyone on here had experience with the Minispares CSI electronic dissys? To have my distributor rebuilt will be around the $150 mark, for not much more I could just get the CSI kit and I wouldn't have to worry about trying to fit an aldon/lumention/petronix type kit. But for a standard 850 I'm not sure if this is overkill and if I would even notice the difference vs a rebuilt standard distributor - although not having to adjust points is another plus. As the car is on historic rego I've been reluctant to go down the electronic ignition path but the CSI solution suggests that you wouldn't be able to tell the difference unless you took the cap off.

Any thoughts/advice would be much appreciated!

Ask Tony (Convertible Mini) as i have heard many good things on this forum about his electronic distributors.

Sounds to me like you should go with the original rebuild.
-your car is original
-your current dizzy has lasted 45 years
-with a rebuild it will feel amazing!

By the power of greyskull that was a fast response... thanks guys

9/61 I'm with you on that one, the car still drives fine as is and thanks to a rebuilt carby a few years back and regular care it doesn't run rough, just the idle varies quite a bit and mechanic says it was a bit hard for him to set the timing. If I do decide on an electronic unit I'll have a chat to Tony.

Tony's are new build copies of your original Lucas dizzy, you will not lose anything over over the replacement. And they are pretty sweet units.
Its worth keeping your original stamped dizzy aside however...

Putting an electronic module in the original dizzy also improves timing accuracy. The receiver is not worried about the gap between it and the rotor shaft, it only watches for the reluctor that passes through its sector in front of it. The movement in the shaft does not affect this very much at all. it will not remove scatter totally however, just reduces it.

I recently gave an old 850 distributor I had to my mate to put into a 1200cc Triumph Herald - exactly the same dizzy, drive dog and all - once rebuilt, didn't that little car go a whole lot better
