 Post subject: cam shafts, how to ID?

Greetings all.

Just a quick question.

I stripped a 998 today for bit's. Looks so good I'll probably use this engine. The cam shaft has no numbers on it. The first journal where the bearing sits (timing chain end) has two slots in it. Does that mean anything?
How do you ID different types?

The slots on the journal are normal, this is part of the oil supply to the rocker gear. It gives one oil pulse per cam revolution.

As for ID'ing the cams,
there are 2 lobe widths- 3/8 for smallbores and 1/2" for 1275s.
There are 3 oil pump drive systems-
pin drive- (pin through cam),
spider drive- (a triangular shaped recess in back of cam),
slot drive- (a radial slot in the end of the cam).
In addition some production cams have 1 or 2 rings marked on their body, see Vizard's yellow book for more info on which cams were used in which motors.

Aftermarket cams- some grinders stamp the front, Graham Russell engraves his on the cam body, many places leave them unmarked.
