Fitting Hi Lo's and coil springs for the first time and have some questions about their orientation .
Does the tower bolt screw into the base plate for the spring ?



And is this how they fit together the knuckle fits into the nylon cup on the upper arm ? and if i have these bits in the right order , how do you adjust the hi lo's when the nuts would be up in the tower ?

EDIT: OOPS after futher thought the picture above is the rear setup im guessing ? and the front doesnt have the extension bar,

Don't know about bolting up the base plate, but to adjust the hi-lo, it is close enough to the upper arm that you can still get at the nuts with a spanner/shifter.

And yea you got the right order for the back, and the front is just minus the extension.

Hey Bill, from my recent experience, I would have a look first to make sure that the adaptor fits snugly in the rear subframe.. We have already discussed my problem which has convinced me to get an adaptor made! I do wonder however, why the alloy adaptor you have there is threaded? Doesn't it just sit into the subframe seat? If so why the thread..?

Havent pulled the rears out yet , but when i pulled the front ones out " rubber cones " they had a thread in them that i thought the tower bolt went into , so i figured thats what the thread is for in the base plate of the coil " it could just be there from manufacturing also ".
Could be wrong though , will have a look tomorrow or thursday if im upto it.

Edit : .......hmmm interesting , i went and had a look at the rest of my coil conversion bits and pieces and found 2 different adapter plates,
Im assuming this is the rear ones

The rubber cones have the nut there so that with a special tool, they can be compressed (drawn up into the tower) to do certain work on the suspension. The threaded hole in the base plate might be designed for later model mini's i'm not sure. I just know they changed the way the towers bolt up to the bulkhead at some point, so maybe it's to do with that.

Yeah i used the cone compressing tool to get the original ones out " bugger of a job " , but i would assume in the original design they wouldnt have come across cones being jammed in their yet ..... so i surmise that the thread was for the tower bolt to hold the cone in place ?.

Would like to know for sure now as i wouldnt like to screw it up.

Edit : one thing i did notice is the base plates and the coils circumference is less than the rubber donuts .

Hey Bill,

That first photo you posted is very similar to the adaptor I received with my kit, which goes on the front suspension. The "male" side slipped into the spring and (in my kit) there is a female side which the front Hilo sits in! I don't have anything but the actual spring base seated in the subframe tower. As pointed out, thread was necessary to compress the springs allowing fitment!

The last pic you posted is very similar to the adaptors that I am going to try and get made. Again however, it will depend on whether you have a wet or dry subframe. The difference ( which Simon kindly pointed out to me) is significant with respect to the adapter mount.. I. Just guessing but the ones you posted look like they would be for a dry subby,

I think this first photo is of the plate that the hi lo fits into. check the image at:

Not sure of what happens at the other end - if the other plate is for the spring to sit into where the donut used to be. Do any of the other plates resemble the end of the donut that sits against the top of the tower (at the other end from the hilo)?
